Why exactly are "school police" even a thing in the first place? Maybe I've just had a sheltered upbringing, but no school I've ever been to had any issues that would even begin to justify having their own dedicated full time security staff. What the fuck is going on at these schools where they feel the need to spend money on this sort of thing?

Probably because everyone thinks the next shooting will be at their school. So rather than do anything to combat the source of the issue, they send in more po-po and more guns.
Guys, this is getting creepy. Can we talk about cannibalism instead?

My high school was in the middle of territory that was split between several rival gangs.  Though we never had a drive-by while I was there, we had a large (6+ people) fight once or twice a week.  The only thing that was likely holding them back from hosing the school's front lawn in lead was the police presence it'd established.  Sometimes, it really is a necessity.

Only in the South, even though normally even we would be calling them out on this.

...HEY!

said it would remove three grenade launchers it had acquired because they "are not essential life-saving items within the scope, duties and mission" of the district's police force.

See, they are only keeping the assault rifles and the mine resistant armoured vehicle. ...Nothing unreasonable.

Yup.  Despite all its posturing and bullshitting, Little Rock Central High School is a complete, utter shithole.  It may not be literally falling apart like it used to be in my brother's day, but its constant overcrowding and the fact that its literally the "fallback" high school for people that couldn't get into something better because they didn't get there in time or weren't in the district ensure that it is every bit as friendly as a chicken house...and probably with as much cannibalism going on.

The MRAP has been stripped of weapon mounts and turrets and will be outfitted with medical supplies and teddy bears for use in emergencies to evacuate students and staff, she said.

Totally reasonable.

(and the next paragraph was about a school district's police chief returning the assault riflest they had since they had no use for them and had no idea why their predecessor even wanted them.)

It's a good thing grenade launchers are easy to aim and can't cause any collateral damage whatsoever.

THEY WERE SENDING BACK THE GRENADE LAUNCHERS!

It says so in the article.

Because even though some of the school-police think they need assault rifles (and honestly, having one or two in a locker just in case is not that crazy even though they are unlikely to need them) they know that they have no real use for grenade launchers.

I am guessing that these launchers were the type that are attached to an assault rifle and they got them with the guns and are now returning them as unneeded.

...But as I said before they are keeping the armoured car and packing it with medical supplies and teddy bears. Just. In. Case.

Personally, I think schools need more high explosive weaponry.  Maybe a couple Javelin missile launchers or even a few MLRS batteries.
