"Gun ownership should be prohibited for those without a valid reason" implies that you need a reason, which is not generally something we demand of people before we let them own things.

Most things don't make it easy to deliberately or accidentally kill people.
Quote from: Jordan Duram
It doesn't concern you, Sister, that kind of absolutist view of the universe? Right and wrong determined solely by a single all-knowing, all powerful being whose judgment cannot be questioned and in whose name the most horrendous acts can be sanctioned without appeal?

Quote from: Supreme Court of Canada
Being required by someone else’s religious beliefs to behave contrary to one’s sexual identity is degrading and disrespectful.

Yeaaah...I mean, one needs a license to fish in America, and the worst thing not related to the various nasty things that can be done by fish hooks that can happen to you whilst fishing is setting yourself up for a deep-vein thrombosis.

I would disagree. For most things, we simply agree that "I want it" is a perfectly valid reason.

yes, I know? I'm not arguing against gun control, I'm saying that the sentence quoted by Art is meaningful and not a tautology

I would disagree. For most things, we simply agree that "I want it" is a perfectly valid reason.

I don't think people should not be allowed to buy ordinary things if they don't want them, either. Owning most things does not have a 'check the validity of reasons' step.

But this is kind of a tangent, the real reason that question is there is because people are more likely to say yes if they are in favour of gun control, independently of what you could precisely parse the phrasing to mean.

But it is not an uncommon thing with firearm laws. In Finland you need to state what you plan to do with your gun. But as "hunt things that are legal to hunt with it" used to be the only answer needed it was pretty much a formality. Nowadays you also have to prove that you have been training for 2 years before buying your own gun. (Don't know people who can borrow you guns? Don't have a firing range nearby? Well, sucks to be you, you aren't getting a gun.)

On the other hand, proof of being a safe gun owner would be a good thing to have as a requirement. We demand drivers license from people before we let them drive a car and something similar would go a long way towards reducing accidental firearm injuries (and I assume it would help reduce suicide-by gun at least among people who don't have a gun yet.)
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!

I got Libertarian Socialism and to be honest I had to look that up...

...and I disagree.   The wikipedia page I don't think describes me at all.  But for a lot of those questions my real answers would be "Err I never really thought about it, mate..." and/or "Well that depends..." which obviously aren't options.  That might have affected my score.
