Minnesota Councilman Proudly Displays Confederate Flag
« on: February 12, 2012, 10:54:25 pm »
So there's this city councilman from West St. Paul, Minnesota, named Ed Hansen who displays a Confederate flag emblazoned with the word "REDNECK" on the deck of his house, easily visible from the street and a nearby park.

Some nice quotes from this asshole:

"It represents sovereignty, individual rights and individual liberty. It's my free speech, and that's my choice."

Sure, it represents sovereignty. The sovereignty to defy the Federal government and form a separate, racist nation. It also represents individual rights. The individual right to own human chattel. It also represents individual liberty, but only the individual liberty of whites.

"I'm not a racist, and I don't think it's racist. People like to play the race card, though, when they don't get their way."

The moment you feel a need to say "I'm not a racist," you should take a long, hard look at what you just did or said. Because it was probably racist. And people do like to play the race card....when they are talking to a racist.

"They should study history. It represents true sovereignty."

So.....a city councilman....an elected official of the US government....believes that the flag that represents true sovereignty is the flag of a confederacy formed for the express purposes of maintaining a racist, slavery-based economy by seceding from the nation he is supposed to be serving. And he dismisses all criticism as "It's my house, what's the problem?"

Well, Mr. I'm-Not-A-Racist, the problem is that the flag you so cherish even above the flag of the nation you serve (I see no Old Glory on his deck....) for the vast majority of Americans represents a racist, slave nation that fought a war with the USA. Your city has a sizable black population, who all see that flag on your deck as the symbol of lynchings, white sheets, brutal enslavement, the destruction of a culture, and the pathetic clinging to a backwards culture of racist, white elitism. To them it is the symbol of a people whose cruelty towards their forefathers was unimaginable. To them it is a symbol of terror, repression, and hate.

And you, as a city councilman, are supposed to represent these people.

THAT'S the problem, Mr. Hansen. You are saying "fuck you, nigger" to the people you are supposed to be serving. You may not be intending to say that, but I guarantee you this is what people are hearing, and you know it. You are a coward hiding behind the 1st Amendment, wrapping yourself in the Bill of Rights so you can safely spew your hatred.

"In case you're interested, there's still some positions available for that bonus opportunity I mentioned earlier. Again: all you gotta do is let
us disassemble you. We're not banging rocks together here. We know how to put a man back together. So that's a complete reassembly. New vitals. Spit-shine on the old ones. Plus we're scooping out tumors. Frankly, you oughtta be paying us." -Cave Johnson

When I studied history, I learned that the flag you display, Mr. Hansen, was used by rebelling states who were motivated in a large part by maintaining the institution of slavery in the United States. If that is what you mean by “True sovereignty,” then I guess you are correct.

WTF? Minnesota wasn't even a part of the confederacy!
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

Isn't the race card propaganda trope interesting? If the phrase means anything, it means falsely accusing people of racism in order to score a political point or to discredit them, though conservatives love to use the phrase when, as here, liberals accurately accuse people of racism.

But conservatives have no problem falsely accusing people of racism. What's the bet this guy listens to Glenn 'Barack Obama is a racist' Beck? What's the bet this guy thinks that the 90% of African-Americans voting for the party of Civil Rights are, for that reason, racists?

Is that not playing the race card? No; only black people can play the race card. White people may accuse blacks of racism without penalty.

I will concede that he has the right to put up the flag on his own property.  However, it's also my right to consider him a douchecanoe for putting it up, due to what the thing symbolizes and represents to a lot of people... especially in how he's trying to cover himself when his racism is easier to see than Diamanda Hagan in a room full of children.

I mean granted, to some it makes no difference. Kinga like the Kriegsmarine flag all the KKK neonazi retards fly instead of the actual national flag of the time.

I see this guy being more of a moron and a douche nozzle than a racist...I wish people would restrict shouting "racist" at anything whether it really is or not

BTW, I'm not racist, I just like the German military of WWII era...guess that makes me a racist.

Considering the fact that it has the word "REDNECK" emblazoned across it, I would venture to say that officially it is neither of them. At least I don't recall seeing that word on the flag in any of my history books.... Apart from the word, it looks like it is the Stars and Bars.

Redneck hardly says anything but you're a hick and proud of it.

Let me take this in another direction. To native Americans the US flag was a symbol of terror, murder, destruction and theft. I think we should stop flying the US flag because it obviously would upset Native Americans.

Stars and Bars was the official flag of the Confederacy.  It looked a bit like the present GA flag without the seal.  The battle flag that people think of as the stars and bars (St. Andrews Cross with Stars inside it)was actually only used a few times in battle.

That said... I don't care if he displays the 'redneck' flag or not.  Let him.  Let anyone.  It would tell me easily who to avoid.
