France votes marriage equality
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:30:43 am »
ok, psyched about this: france voted yesterday, and it's official. marriage equality finally arrived!

source from Le Parisien http://www.leparisien.fr/politique/en-direct-mariage-gay-suivez-le-vote-de-l-assemblee-nationale-23-04-2013-2751773.php

a friend's mom already invited me to her wedding with her longtime partner. it was only a matter of time, but the wait has been too long in the minds of many.

cheers from france, y'all

Unfortunately, there were violent protests in the wake of its passage.

Quote
France legalized gay marriage on Tuesday after a wrenching national debate that exposed deep conservatism in the nation's heartland and triggered huge demonstrations that tapped into intense discontent with the Socialist government. Within hours, fiery clashes broke out between protesters and riot police.

Legions of officers stayed late into the night, and a protest against the measure turned violent near the Invalides complex of museums and monuments. Protesters threw glass bottles, cans and metal bars at police, who responded with tear gas.

It doesn't concern you, Sister, that kind of absolutist view of the universe? Right and wrong determined solely by a single all-knowing, all powerful being whose judgment cannot be questioned and in whose name the most horrendous acts can be sanctioned without appeal?

Quote from: Supreme Court of Canada
Being required by someone else’s religious beliefs to behave contrary to one’s sexual identity is degrading and disrespectful.

I sympathize completely. However, to use against us. Let me ask you a troll. On the one who pulled it. But here's the question: where do I think it might as well have stepped out of all people would cling to a layman.

ok, uncle guizonde's personnal anecdote time. here is how i knew the law had been passed.

i was walking along with my gf and a friend of hers going through the Capitole (toulousan historical seat of government). waaaaaaay more riot squads than usual (i counted 9 instead of the standard 4). i hear some very bad europop-techno, and see a bunch of people grouped there. seeing flags with stickmen depicting 2 kids and 2 hetero parents. "alrighty, then... some bigots... wonder where the lgbt crowd is". no sooner do i say this that i see one being happy the law had been passed not 20minutes beforehand, and kinda worried about the near-100 strong crowd of bigots, whereas he was alone. we talk a bit, and i went to distract the bigots from him by being flamboyantly camp (the buddy played along for even better effect). i actually shocked a few, and i wish i had stayed for more lulz, but i was pretty late by that point. i bought time for the rest of the lgbt crowd to appear. i didn't know the guy, but i hope he didn't get hurt. at least i distracted the bigots from an easy target, and i finally got to troll them irl.

totally not subtle, but my gf, her buddy, and me laughed so much it was worth it!  ;D

yeah, i think it'll be a while yet 'til it's as accepted as women in pants, but it's a start!

C'est ne pas encore fini!  Not quite finished yet!

It still has to be approved by the Constitutional Commission to ensure that nothing therein is unconstitutional, and then it has to go before the president (Hollande) for his signature.

These two steps are generally perceived here as more or less foregone.

Still, it is another European country that is advancing.

Ireland too is under pressure from its constitutional committee to malke its Civil Partnership (referred to even by officials as marriage) into a proper form of equal marriage for all.  I think the government has four months to consider how best to do this.  Hopefully there will soon be another European state where equality in marriage is for all.
