In what has to be the most hilariously unconstitutional piece of legislation that I've seen in quite some time, senators in the Arizona state legislature have introduced a bill that would require all educational institutions in the state -- including state universities -- to suspend or fire professors who say or do things that aren't allowed on network TV. Yes, you read that right: at the same time the Supreme Court is poised to decide if FCC-imposed limits on "indecent" content in broadcast media are an anachronism from a bygone era, Arizona state legislators want to limit what college professors say and do to only what is fit for a Disney movie (excluding, of course, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. After all, those films are PG-13!).

You can't talk about history, sex, gender politics, sexual science, or many college courses without there being adult things to discuss. This really just amounts to suppression of knowledge and censorship.

I spent 3 weeks in Arizona in 2010, it's a great place. Shame about the people in charge.

Well that's rather counter productive. The entire class I took called Evolution of Human Sex Roles and Reproduction would be verbotten. That was by far the most interesting biological anthro class I took.

The most interesting history professor I had cursed up a storm and cracked all sorts of off color jokes while lecturing us about the History of England. That again wouldn't be allowed, but it was his teaching style that made the class so interesting and really helped me remember the things we covered in lecture.

I really don't understand this type of censorship. By the time a person gets to college they should be able to handle topics about sexuality and hear the word fuck. What kind of adult are you if you can't? It seems to me that such low limits on what a professor can say would make it even harder to get them to engage with students.
