Feds shutdown MegaUploads.com

One of the world's largest file-sharing sites was shut down Thursday, and its founder and several company executives were charged with violating piracy laws, federal prosecutors said.

An indictment accuses Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart online piracy.

The Justice Department said in a statement that Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and three others were arrested Thursday in New Zealand at the request of U.S. officials. Two other defendants are at large.

Megaupload was unique not only because of its massive size and the volume of downloaded content, but also because it had high-profile support from celebrities, musicians and other content producers who are most often the victims of copyright infringement and piracy. Before the website was taken down, it contained endorsements from Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys and Kanye West, among others.

The Hong Kong-based company listed Swizz Beatz, a musician who married Keys in 2010, as its CEO.

Before the site was taken down, it posted a statement saying allegations that it facilitated massive breaches of copyright laws were "grotesquely overblown."

"The fact is that the vast majority of Mega's Internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay. If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch," the statement said.

A lawyer who represented the company in a lawsuit last year declined comment Thursday.

Megaupload is considered a "cyberlocker," in which users can upload and transfer files too large to send by email. Such sites can have perfectly legitimate uses. But the Motion Picture Association of America, which has campaigned for a crackdown on piracy, estimated that the vast majority of content being shared on Megaupload was in violation of copyright laws.

I never really liked megauploads anyway.  But still it is kind of sad to see them go down.  But I would use this as a argument AGAINST the needing of SOPA and PIPA. I mean this is a "over seas" company that is supposedly advocating piracy and the feds were able to shut them down.

I had a lot of files (probably 100 odd), from my fansubbing group up there, and a good chunk of them I don't have myself. So I have a lot of files to reupload elsewhere and a lot of appeals to make.
How the fuck does US law apply to a HK company anyway.

I would consider this an argument against, too. I know they did host some copyrighted material, but shutting down an overseas site like that, even without the passage of SOPA/PIPA? Yikes.

Don't you know? We've always been at war with Eastasia.
Matthew 22:39 "And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." God's own "don't be a dick" rule.

Lithp and Vene really need to have some kind of confusing sexual encounter where Vene spends the entire session lovingly insulting Lithp's technique, then cums on his face, ruffles his hair, says, "You're all right, kid!", and then punches him in the nuts.

I personally would love nothing more than the feds not being able to find anything to prosecute on and all the people who use the site legitimately sue the feds as well as the MPAA for damages.

Edit- On a side note who else is just waiting to see if Anonymous will pull something off as a retaliation to this?

MegaUpload does not engage in criminal activity, yet because certain people use MegaUpload to do so, MegaUpload must be shut down?

Following that logic, the U.S. Postal Service should be shut down because some folks sent some package bombs or infectious material through the mail.

Can't bring up the official statement from justice.gov because some anon spoiled brats are apparently DDoSing it from what I'm hearing.

However, Altanticwire has it.

The investigation was initiated and led by the FBI at the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center), with assistance from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. Substantial and critical assistance was provided by the New Zealand Police, the Organised and Financial Crime Agency of New Zealand (OFCANZ), the Crown Law Office of New Zealand and the Office of the Solicitor General for New Zealand; Hong Kong Customs and the Hong Kong Department of Justice; the Netherlands Police Agency and the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Serious Fraud and Environmental Crime in Rotterdam; London’s Metropolitan Police Service; Germany’s Bundeskriminalamt and the German Public Prosecutors; and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police – Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Federal Enforcement Section and the Integrated Technological Crime Unit and the Canadian Department of Justice’s International Assistance Group. Authorities in the United Kingdom, Australia and the Philippines also provided assistance.

This wasn't just the US, it was by quite a few countries.

Let me make it real easy... if anyone is interested in my actual opinion, please ask, I'd love to talk to you. If you are interested in trying to catch me out in some sort of "gotcha, before you said 'many', but now you're saying 'lots', you totally shifted goal posts", then, I'm not playing.

Guy potentially keeping counterfeit goods in his safe deposit box? Shut down the entire bank. And all associated branches. No citizen, move along, nothing going on here.
