Title: Louisiana textbooks: KKK ok, evolution disproven and Loch Ness monster alive
Post by: Tolpuddle Martyr on June 19, 2012, 08:39:33 pm
According to this (http://www.alternet.org/education/155926/the_loch_ness_monster_is_real;_the_kkk_is_good:_the_shocking_content_of_publicly_paid_for_christian_school_textbooks?page=entire) article:
Quote
...a bill pushed through by governor Bobby Jindal, thousands of students in Louisiana will receive state voucher money, transferred from public school funding, to attend private religious schools, some of which teach from a Christian curriculum that suggests the Loch Ness Monster disproves evolution...

The same "Christian curriculum" has a few other howlers, including:

Quote

    - Only ten percent of Africans can read or write, because Christian mission schools have been shut down by communists.
    - "the [Ku Klux] Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross... In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians."
    - "God used the 'Trail of Tears' to bring many Indians to Christ."
    - It "cannot be shown scientifically that that man-made pollutants will one day drastically reduce the depth of the atmosphere's ozone layer."
    - "God has provided certain 'checks and balances' in creation to prevent many of the global upsets that have been predicted by environmentalists."
    - the Great Depression was exaggerated by propagandists, including John Steinbeck, to advance a socialist agenda.
    - "Unions have always been plagued by socialists and anarchists who use laborers to destroy the free-enterprise system that hardworking Americans have created."
    - Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential win was due to an imaginary economic crisis created by the media.
    - "The greatest struggle of all time, the Battle of Armageddon, will occur in the Middle East when Christ returns to set up his kingdom on earth."

Americans, there are your taxpayer dollars at work!

I believe Louisiana was once described as "a third world country masquerading as a state."

That is a truly special kind of stupid, or at least the parts that are stupid are, the rest are just blatant lies with an obvious right wing agenda. It is articles like these that make me glad to live in a country with merely a pathetic and underfunded education system instead of the mess you American have in Louisiana.

We had a small outbreak of schools wanting to teach creationism here. A teacher stood up for science and lodged a complaint. Within a week the board of education had bitch slapped those schools back into line, which given how abysmal our board of education is, is a remarkable achievement. They might be useless and corrupt but even they believe science comes first.

"We are not fucking up the Earth"

Quote
"God has provided certain 'checks and balances' in creation to prevent many of the global upsets that have been predicted by environmentalists."
"It's just fine and dandy for us to fuck up the Earth because Jesus will fix everything"

Methinks these two arguments are a tad contradictory. Is man-made climate change happening, or is it not happening? Pick a side and stick with it, already.

I can only be thankful to my parents for having a subscription to childcraft and other secular informative books.  I don't know what or where I'd be without them.

A memory.   I remember when I wanted to introduce a dinosaur and prehistoric animal to my Kindergarten... or maybe 1st period class... I can't remember now.   Anyway... my teacher said it was too complicated.  I couldn't fathom that.  I thought everyone knew what I knew... On into biology... such a fascinating subject... when not compromised, of course.

What the hell?!  How can you have your textbooks praising the KKK?

I really feel sorry for the kids having to go through such bullshit.

Isn't this pretty much blatantly unconstitutional? If not, could someone with legal expertise (paging erictheblue...) kindly explain to ignorant ol' me how it is not? From the Googling around and legalese reading I've done, it seems to be, but there's a reason I'm just a number cruncher and not a lawyer.

You say that as though the Constitution stops Christians from doing as they please. That's now how it works around here.

Well, considering that David Duke won 55% of the white vote during the 1991 election for governor of Louisiana, I am not as surprised by this as I would be in a saner world.

As a kid, I dreamed of a world that would resemble science fiction.  Instead, I got a world that resembles satire.

Someone needs to send a team of construction workers to New Orleans, dismantle the Café du Monde brick by brick, and rebuild it somewhere progressive. Beignets are probably the only thing worth salvaging from that state ahead of its inevitable decline into the neo-Dark Ages.

This hurts me. As others have said, the real victims of this are the children who have to ingest it during their formative years. I know people are entitled to believe what they want, but I feel the line should be drawn when they foist their faulty ideas onto people too young to defend themselves. I hope that the students can find some help somewhere.

Guess what? Republicans are now turning their backs on the bill because a Muslim school tired to applied for the voucher and they want only Christian schools to prosper. So much for "religious freedom".

Would someone like to explain to these idiots that extinction is nowhere near the same thing as evolution, and that even if the Loch Ness monster was found to be real it would do nothing to disprove either of them, and that all the other 99.9% of fossilized species are still extinct.

If we found a frickin' living species of pterosaur in the jungles of Africa, it still would have spent the last 65 million years evolving.

Even the coelacanths of today are a hell of a lot different than the coelacanths of prehistoric times and show evidence of having evolved.
