Title: Australians express support for same-sex marriage

It looks like Aussies are in favour of same-sex marriage.

Quote
According the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 79.5 per cent of those eligible to participate responded to the survey. Of those, 61.6 per cent supported a change to the law, while 38.4 per cent did not.

...

In Australia, voting in elections and referenda is compulsory, but the Senate refused to fund a binding vote. Almost 80 per cent of more than 16 million registered voters posted ballots in the voluntary survey, which gay marriage advocates opposed as an unnecessary obstacle and opponents derided as being about a boutique issue of little public interest.

The UN Human Rights Committee last week criticized Australia for putting gays and lesbians "through an unnecessary and divisive public opinion poll." The committee called on Australia to legislate for marriage equality regardless of the survey's outcome.

Whaddaya know, Australian conservatives are already using the results of the plebiscite to try to push through more legally sanctioned discrimination! (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2017/nov/15/religious-protection-fight-looms-over-same-sex-marriage-bill)

Best quote of the day goes to the journo (http://junkee.com/no-campaign-marriage-result/135058) who covered 'No' campaigner and 'conversion therapy' snake oil salesman, Lyle Shelton's concession speech.

Quote
Shelton himself looked like a man trying very hard to not look like he’d just been brutally owned. He was smiling, gracious in defeat except for the part where he tried to say the Yes campaign had a decade’s head start on campaigning, and also the part where he backed the Paterson bill as a reasonable step forward.

The Paterson bill being once-proposed legislation that would not have change the legal definition of marriage but merely ads gay marriage as a separate form of marriage that some could choose to believe (http://junkee.com/marriage-james-paterson-bill/134592) in-and allow bakers and others to refuse service to gays (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-11-14/same-sex-marriage-bill-dismissed-by-turnbull/9150872). The bill was such a turkey that the senator who bore it's name recently dropped it (http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2017/11/15/james-paterson-drops-plans-introduce-alternative-same-sex-marriage-bill).

Fuckin' delicious!(https://rlv.zcache.com/conservative_tears_lovewins_coffee_mug-r1018a077a33b43989eb8e041b3bcc867_x7jg5_8byvr_324.jpg)

Folks in Finland are already complaining about Australia for allowing same-sex marriage. Yes, we passed a similar law a while ago but they still haven't given up.

I haven't looked at the local Catholic paper for years now, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they still call it same-sex "marriage".

Good! I hope Australia gets in step with the rest of the Anglosphere on this.
