More reasons to hate Wal-Mart
« on: July 02, 2012, 09:30:59 pm »

I'm not really sure what else needs to be said about this one.  Sam Walton is rolling in his grave.

Time to use the anti-trust act and break up this monopoly.
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

So Teddy Roosevelt would also be spinning in his grave.

While most of the infographic is good, I feel that the two points attacking the 6 wallmart heirs is pretty pointless. Wallmart is evil, but the children of the owners of large companies are always given bucket loads of cash. Wallmart isn't special in that case, and from the look of the numbers, they receive less than usual.

I feel your pain.

Oh and, here's yet another reason to hate Walmart:

That just pisses me off.  That's unconscionable.  When you're falling, grabbing at something is a reflex!  It doesn't really matter who or what it is.    Fuck WalMart's cruel corporation sideways with a cactus.

While I somewhat agree, it is important to point  this out IMHO. Even the various descendants of the John Rockefeller still owe a lot to his fortune.

That is a good graphic -- where did it come from?  Is it "shareable"?

It's from SumOfUs.com, and since their infographics tend to show up on a lot of social-media sites, it probably is shareable.  Double-check at the URL at the bottom of the infographic, though, just to be sure. :)

EDIT
Re: Sam Walton, I've spoken to former Wal-Mart employees from back when he was still alive and running the company.  Apparently, he had a real interest in making sure his workers were treated fairly and paid a living wage.  Then after he died, the whole fair-treatment-of-low-wage-employees thing went out the window.

Like I said before the forum revert, Sam may have treated his employees better than they are now, but he was still a scumbag in other ways.

His business strategy was basically this:
-Don't open up in cities where there's major competition, and instead open in a bunch of small towns.
-Destroy all the small businesses in the area.
-Close all but 1 or 2 of the Wal-Marts in that area.
-Now everyone has to shop at Wal-Mart.

Edit for spelling errors.

^Pretty much the default strategy even now. The market managers actually take time to drive around and estimate how long it'll take them to drive everyone else out of business, and adjust their plans accordingly. They're very rarely wrong.

Some of Walmart's indoctrination training modules are absolutely awful. Take the Alcohol Compliance (aka "How to Sell Booze") mod: The opening graphic basically implies that even if you follow the law exactly, that Walmart can and will hold you accountable (aka fire your ass) if the customer does something dodgy with their product in the privacy of their own home. So if someone of legal age to buy alcohol buys it from you, then later someone under-age gets drunk and hurts someone, Walmart will fire you and hand you over to the cops for prosecution - because somehow (according to the mod) you can be held accountable for the actions a complete stranger takes of their own will hours after your perfectly legal transaction with their friend.

Total bullshit. I mean, yes, Walmart will fire you for the above scenario - but not because you're somehow "criminally responsible" for the actions of the minor. It's because they'll fire you for even being tangentially involved in any and all criminal activity. They don't discriminate in this - it doesn't matter if you go and murder someone or if you're the primary witness to a murder. Walmart will fire your ass regardless because they don't want their business even remotely linked to a crime. There's a provision in their policy that promises re-hire once the issue settles (assuming you're found innocent), but they leave out the fact that they will not give you comparable hours or a wage even close to what you enjoyed previously...and that's assuming there's an "opening" even available (there won't be). So if you work for Walmart, don't ever intervene in a crime or you'll be out of a job.

Walmart fucking sucks.
