I believed in God before he confirmed his existence
« on: September 05, 2013, 08:40:46 pm »
I once remembered that there was once a troll on these boards a while back who was probably a child who typed posts severe misspellings.

One thing I noted was the logic that if God or some other true maker of the universe revealed his/her/its presence to humanity, people would only worship that entity because that entity revealed itself not because of "love".

This sounds very similar to the phenomenon where underground bands or film artists go mainstream and the original fans scorn the newcomers because the newcomers didn't put in the same level of commitment as the original fans and are only wanting to be in the club just to be "cool".

I don't know how often this kind of thinking happens among certain fundamentalists. One would think they should be ecstatic to have more people siding with their deity or system.

Huh?
I am an old man, and I've seen many problems, most of which never happened.

Belief doesn't really require confirmation.  It certainly would be nice, but without confirmation, that's where faith comes in.  Some people need more evidence to believe or have faith.  That's their choice.

It's not faith if you have evidence. It is acknowledgement of facts.

Yes, but without evidence, it relies only on faith.  Some people need more than that, some don't.  It's not my place to say who is 'wrong' or 'right'.

I know. What I am saying is that if you rely on evidence to have faith, you're not relying on evidence to have faith, you're asking for proof of claims. I "rely on evidence to have faith". I'm an atheist, because I want claims to be proven.

Ah yeah.  So you weren't disagreeing with me per se, you were simply adding your two pennies.

I need to come to the boards remembering to bring my brain.

And suppose God did reveal himself, but with the purpose of telling us that a bigger, badder, more powerful god took over his throne in Heaven and now God's just another impotent mortal. If he said then to Christians "But, you guys still love me, right?" What do you think the answer would be?

The fundies would probably call him an imposter because "God is perfect and there is nothing bigger than Him"

They claim he's Satan in disguise.

Better question: God reveals himself, and admits that the New Testament is a lie that he made up, and that Satan actually has taken over Heaven. He also reveals that the Old Testament is true. Also, Satan has a non-intervention policy, but is lax on it and breaks it to help the innocent and punish the guilty when he thinks they really need it. Purgatory also exists, but only because Satan created it, and Hell was infinite until Satan ended that, too, and made it temporary for most, barring completely horrible individuals like Ariel Castro, Hitler, Stalin, Richard Ramirez and the like. Also, Satan's Heaven operates on the "do good works, idgaf if you have faith, and most of the Bible rules are full of shit" rule. God acts exactly like the Old Testament God, and praises Israel for following the Old Testament quite well. How does the world react?
