Because I think we need a thread to celebrate him.

Question from a non-American, why is he such a big deal?

From what I've seen he was a pretty cool guy.

I've seen lots of inspiring quotations credited to him on the internet.
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!

Aside from being a staple of our childhoods, he was an objectively wonderful person.

Well, hell, I'm a wonderful person and no one fusses over me.
I am an old man, and I've seen many problems, most of which never happened.

Get a long-running TV show and single-handedly save the US's national public broadcaster and we might.

It doesn't concern you, Sister, that kind of absolutist view of the universe? Right and wrong determined solely by a single all-knowing, all powerful being whose judgment cannot be questioned and in whose name the most horrendous acts can be sanctioned without appeal?

Quote from: Supreme Court of Canada
Being required by someone else’s religious beliefs to behave contrary to one’s sexual identity is degrading and disrespectful.

I believe a biography is in order. Anyone care to indulge in the most heartwarming, most beautiful, rendition of this man's life? (from someone who was touched by this man's actions and speeches, I mean)
@ guizonde: I think I like the way you think.

As it's been said earlier, the man was simply amazing in life.  If folks were so inclined, we'd probably make him a saint.  Mr. Rogers was the kind of guy who could sit down with Fred Phelps and make him be pleasant.
There is light and darkness in the world, to be sure.  However, there's no harm to be had in walking in the shade or shadows.

One of the nastiest urban legends I've heard about Mr. Rogers is that he was a former Navy sniper with an undisclosed number of kills. Supposedly, the sweaters were to hide his tattoos and he engaged in the whole show, the charities he participated in, everything, as a form of work therapy.

Some people just can't accept that someone could be so unrelentingly good without hiding a dark secret.

If you look at it logically, cannibalism has great potential to simultaneously solve our overpopulation and food shortage problems.

He was a preacher that practiced what he preached.  A rarity to be celebrated indeed.   He was a good 'un, as we say around here.

A nice thought:  Sandman and Mr. Rogers trading stories in the afterlife.

That particular clip wasn't quite what it looked like.  Still quite funny how it happened though.

They'd probably get along pretty well.
