Roger Ebert dies after battle with cancer
« on: April 04, 2013, 04:38:22 pm »
Quote
Roger Ebert loved movies.

Except for those he hated.

For a film with a daring director, a talented cast, a captivating plot or, ideally, all three, there could be no better advocate than Roger Ebert, who passionately celebrated and promoted excellence in film while deflating the awful, the derivative, or the merely mediocre with an observant eye, a sharp wit and a depth of knowledge that delighted his millions of readers and viewers.

“No good film is too long,” he once wrote, a sentiment he felt strongly enough about to have engraved on pens. “No bad movie is short enough.”

Ebert, 70, who reviewed movies for the Chicago Sun-Times for 46 years and on TV for 31 years, and who was without question the nation’s most prominent and influential film critic, died Thursday in Chicago. He had been in poor health over the past decade, battling cancers of the thyroid and salivary gland.

...

He first had surgery to remove a malignant tumor on this thyroid in 2002, and three subsequent surgeries on his salivary gland, all the while refusing to cut back on his TV show or his lifelong pride and joy, his job at the Sun-Times.

Man, this is sad. I think it was just yesterday I read the article about his cancer returning. I didn't expect this.
Guys, this is getting creepy. Can we talk about cannibalism instead?

I just found out--really sad stuff. But we can always reflect on his more awesome moments. Like his review of Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. Stein had previously accused Ebert of bias in refusing to review the steaming pile of horse shit anti-evolution documentary. Stein got what he wanted and more in a lengthy review/rebuttal called "Win Ben Stein's mind". Fucking awesome.

That said, I've stopped trying to anticipate what people around here want a while ago, I've found it makes things smoother.
For I was an hungred, and ye told me to pull myself up by my bootstraps: I was thirsty, and ye demanded payment for the privilege of thine urine: I was a stranger, and ye deported me: naked, and ye arrested me for indecency.

He was diagnosed with cancer back in 2003. He kept working, cheerfully, all through the ten years he battled the disease, losing his health and vitality and bone and his voice and the ability to simply enjoy a proper meal, up until the day before he passed away.

My review of Roger Ebert's character:

Thumb's Up...Wayyyyyy Up!!

I sympathize completely. However, to use against us. Let me ask you a troll. On the one who pulled it. But here's the question: where do I think it might as well have stepped out of all people would cling to a layman.

He kicked ass right until the very end.

And here are some glowing tributes to the man.

I bought I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie up north a few years ago. It's a compilation of some of his most entertaining bad movie reviews up to 200.

One of those reviewers I actually liked (the other being Johnathon Ross), he constantly surprised me by having much the same opinions I had about movies and he liked (and highly rated) one of my favourite flims.

RIP Good Sir.
