Time to trademark everyday words!
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:56:24 pm »
(Putting this here because it seems to fit best.)

http://www.cbc.ca/newsblogs/yourcommunity/2014/01/candy-crush-app-developer-trademarks-the-word-candy.html

Quote
Developers of the wildly popular mobile game Candy Crush Saga aren't too sweet on the idea of anyone else using the word "candy" to sell a product, it seems.

Interactive entertainment company King.com has successfully trademarked the word "candy" as it pertains to apps, video games, computer software, clothing, e-books, and even baby monitors, according to its U.S. federal trademark registration.

So, what next?
Quote from: Jordan Duram
It doesn't concern you, Sister, that kind of absolutist view of the universe? Right and wrong determined solely by a single all-knowing, all powerful being whose judgment cannot be questioned and in whose name the most horrendous acts can be sanctioned without appeal?

Quote from: Supreme Court of Canada
Being required by someone else’s religious beliefs to behave contrary to one’s sexual identity is degrading and disrespectful.

...apps, video games, computer software, clothing, e-books, and even baby monitors.

But I can still freely use "Candy" as my stripper name right?

Also, this is bullshit. Why the heck were they allowed to have a word as common as "candy" trademarked? I would have accepted "Candy crush" since that is the name of their game but why candy? What's next? Disney gets a trademark for star, wars and Indiana?
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!

I thought this kind of thing was struck down in the past? Bethesda tried to sue Mojang for using the word "scrolls" as the title of their new (at the time) game and failed. Shouldn't that set a precedent that you can't trademark individual words?

Dibs on royalty rights for "the"!
History is full of maniacs, my friend, men and women of intelect, highly perceptive individuals, who's brilliant minds know neither restraint nor taboo. Such notions are the devils we must slay for the edification of pony-kind. Even if said edification means violating the rules of decency, society, and rightousness itself.

Disney tried to trademark Day of the Day/Dia de los Muertos, even though it existed before them.
That may be the single gayest thing I have ever read on this board. Or the old one. ;)

I want them for "I"!  It's the most commonly-used word in the English language, after all.

I am glad I have never played that piece of shit now.

Fuck these people.  They should never have been allowed to trademark this, who in their right mind allowed this!?

The time for objections has not yet elapsed. It is making the news because apple is already suing someone over it. Basically the only way to protect intellectual property rights. Here's hoping it is challenged and struckdown.. on the otherhand I have a trademark over the word 'crackerstm'

The only reason Apple's suing over it is the fact that they got kicked in the balls on trying to trademark the lowercase i themselves!

And even if the law doesn't get struck down, there's no way they can enforce it.  It's like the bizarro-universe version of the "thermos dilemma".
