Title: Stupidly Expensive Things You Might Actually Buy
Post by: Damen on June 06, 2012, 09:06:12 pm
I had this thread on the old boards a long while back and wanted to resurrect it. I'll just quote my opening post from the ye olde version:

Quote
We've all seen it; that one item in the window that's just so awesomely fantastic it makes you drool and want to have it's babies. Maybe it's a new pair of boots, maybe a purse. You know, those items that can't be taken as anything but status symbols.

The only thing here is, now I'm talking about stupidly expensive stuff you may actually buy assuming you get enough disposable income to justify the new toy. For me, that's already happened.

Behold! My new toy!

Looking nice. What's the thing next to the stock/above the trigger that looks like half a bullet had been melted into the plastic?

Not stupidly expensive, but more than I can afford. I'll still probably get them in the fall.

...you mean the forward assist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forward_assist)? Also, the receivers are made of aluminum, not plastic. :P

Ah yes, that's what I meant. How much did it cost? I would one day like to buy a bolt-action, but here you would have to spend at least $900 for the gun, let alone getting a license.

As for something I want and that is stupidly (relative to my income) expensive:

-snip-

Ordered the kit and stripped lower receiver, shipping and transfer fees on the lower; I got away with $660 dollars by ordering it that way and assembling it myself.

Reminds me of last October when I just had to buy a pair of fashion boots for $70 because they looked that nice. They can be seen in that picture of me in the member pics thread. But yeah, I generally have to avoid shoe stores because if I can I know I will end up buying something expensive.  ::)

Also, IDK if you know this, but check out Wet Seal stores every now and then (if they're in your area). They usually have very good clearance sales. I found a pair of Ugg boots essentially for free a couple months ago (I bought a winter coat and it was buy 1 item get another free). Only downside is that they Uggs look best in Fall so I have to wait.  :(

Uggs? I would never.

But thanks for the tip!

if I can get cash together, I suppose my plan is technically to buy expensive plane tickets, but they're so I can get a dear friend of mine in Singapore over here for a visit to the states.

A new gaming PC.

I would basically have to do a complete build from the ground up, as I do not have a previous desktop to pull extra peripherals from.

When you factor in all of the parts needed for the computer itself ($700-$1000 at the least), A good monitor (around $200+), Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, Headset, A power strip to plug everything into, It comes out to at least $1400.

Oh, and I also need a new desk to put it all on.

Would rent my own apartment count as insanely expensive?

Renting isn't really buying though now is it?

Had I the money, I would buy this Bad Religion vinyl boxed set. (http://www.kingsroadmerch.com/bad-religion/view/?id=1668&cid=1) Technically it's not stupidly expensive, but it's a lot of money to spend on records. Also I really can't afford that either way.

...seriously? If you build it yourself you can have that set-up for around $700 dollars, give or take.

Do you know where I can get the materials to build it?

Well, I got myself this (http://www.surplusammo.com/aero-precision-ar15-stripped-lower-receiver/) lower receiver shipped to a local place so they could transfer it to me, and then I ordered a parts kit from Del-Ton Inc. (http://www.del-ton.com/Rifle_Kit_p/rkt100.htm) which got shipped right to my front door.

Alas, however, at the moment DTI isn't accepting new orders for parts kits because they got a huge backlog of orders from people scared that the next election's gonna see Obama get a second term and they think HE GUNNA GET DER GUNZ!

I want a original Mini Cooper.

In green. A mint one would probably cost around 6000€ by now.

Well, over the past few days, I went from “Might buy” to bought on a 42" Panasonic “Smart” HDTV. It was actually on sale, and I got the sales associate to price match to the store website, which had an even lower sale price, on top of it. (On top of it, the website price went down an additional $30 while I was making up my mind—so, bonus.) So in the end, it was not nearly as stupidly expensive as it would have been at full price. Honestly, my biggest source of hesitation was actually that it was way bigger than anything I thought I would ever buy. But now that I got it hooked up, I’m lovin’ it! :D

How reasonable would it be to request a couple hundred dollars for my birthday to buy a corset, and nothing else?
