And Germany ties with Ghana.  So all the USA needs to do is beat Portugal to advance out of groups with a loss to Germany.

Ironbite-maybe I shouldn't have wrote the USA off before this thing started.

So a guy bet $350,000 on Argentina to beat Iran. The payoff? $30,000.

EDIT: Completely unrelated but so as not to double-post...

I'm currently laughing my ass off at the US's second goal against Portugal.

EDIT again: More unrelated stuff, but again, not double-posting...

So who knew that Obama played football for England?

Well now since we (U.S) tied with Portugal, we need to tie or beat Germany to capture the second spot in the group ranking for a chance at the playoffs.  However, if we clench the second spot, that means we will be playing Belgium in the first round who has a record of 2 wins of two games at the time of this posting.

On another note, I think it's good to see U.S. follow the World Cup more actively.  Ten to twenty years ago, you wouldn't see a following like what you see now.

If you lose to Germany, you can still get the second spot if Ghana and Portugal tie. If not, it gets trickier.

Suarez is going to become the butt of innumerable jokes, because his bite is like Zidane's headbutt, only he's not in the conversation for "greatest of all time" like Zidane is.

And next on "Coultergeist: The Series":

Soccer is destroying the USA. So says conservative syndicated columnist Ann Coulter.

Now I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm no great sports fan myself; I think our culture's worship of athletes goes beyond any sort of pale. I played soccer for a few years in school and found the entire sports experience toxic; for all the talk of teamwork and everyone pulling together, I was the team punching bag, blamed for any losses even if I had performed perfectly.

On the other hand, I'm tempted to start watching soccer on the general principle that if Ann Coulter hates something, it's got to have some redeeming value.

Soccer is the only sport I find remotely entertaining, incidentally.

Not entertaining enough to be a dedicated fan, which is why I don't haven't given much of a shit about this world cup.  I enjoy the discussion here, though, because I know the people here aren't rabid cheeseheads (amerifootball, I know) who are going to murder each other for supporting different teams.
Mockery of ideas you don't comprehend or understand is the surest mark of unintelligence.

Ann Coulter can stuff it.  I really wish she said that in front of a U.S. soccer fan and sees what happens.

The hero worship of athletes comes from how sports can be entertaining, and sometimes athletes can do inspirational feats of human performance.  Often the efforts of one athlete can bleed onto another not as great player, and here is this not as great player getting a big head over it.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with your high school soccer team.  I agree, what you were a part of was definitely not a team.
