The US Supreme Court has ruled that a lawsuit brought by Our Children's Trust on behalf of a group of children between the ages of 8 and 19 against the US government for failing to adequately protect the environment and ensure a habitable world for said children can proceed.

The US Solicitor General was seeking to have the case stayed because of the tight timescale for discovery and trial preparation, given that a fifty-day trial will take place later this year.

Lawsuits against fossil fuel companies had failed because the plaintiffs were unable to prove how responsible each such company was for the damage done.

They only allowed it to continue. They're still going to vote down the result. Don't get all happy over this.

At the very least, by allowing it to continue, it brings out a lot of stuff with the discovery process--internal documents, sworn depositions--which will then be out in the open.

None of which will matter, since the final result is already a foregone conclusion and there's nothing any of us can do to alter that except try to vote in more Democrats. If that fails, we're just plain doomed.
