22-year-old man was charged with murder Thursday in the death of a candidate for mayor in the Mississippi Delta.

Marco McMillian, 34, was running for mayor in Clarksdale, Miss. A suspect has been charged with murder in the case.

The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department in Mississippi said in a statement that Lawrence Reed of Clarksdale, Miss., was under investigation in the death of the candidate, Marco McMillian, 34. Medical experts on Thursday performed an autopsy on Mr. McMillian, whose body was found beside a levee on Wednesday near Clarksdale, where he was running for office.

Well isn't that peachy... thanks Deep South for makin' us look even worse.

My brother told me about this on the way home. You should have seen my face. I don't think I've ever pulled off a more disapproving look before ever in my life.

Welllll... Look on the brighter side though...  Someone was charged.  A little over half a century or so ago nothing would have been done most likely.

EDIT:  Oh, and it's Mississippi, not Georgia.  Biiiig difference there. ;)

Yeah, every other Southern state can take comfort in knowing that they are not Mississippi.

It's so great being from Texas, because it's like the south, only better.

...okay, not really. Still beats Mississippi, though.

First it's sinkholes in bedrooms, now it's timewarps.

Maybe that sinkhole is really a dimensional warp?

Yes, that's exactly what I was saying.

Umm...how do we know for certain he was murdered specifically because he was black and/or gay and for no other reason? The police said there was no evidence to suggest that. Aren't we kind of making assumptions and jumping to conclusions here without any evidence and before being in posession of all the facts? We really should try to avoid that.

That may well be the reason, but we don't KNOW that for sure. It's speculation. And before anyone says something like "well why else would he have been murdered" that reasoning is a bit too close to God of the Gaps for my taste.
