According to the press here when England loses again it'll be because of El Nino.  It definately won't have anything to do with them not being good enough, nope.  That's why England hasn't won since 1966 and never won before 1966 - fuckin' El Nino every time.

I just love how the excuses have started before the the first match of the Cup has even been played, usualy we have to wait until England's actually been eliminated before the excuses come.

Also, why is it called the World Cup when the prize isn't a cup?  Shouldn't it be the World Trophy?

For comparison here's the European Cup: actually a cup...

And the world cup: not a cup...
I'm assuming it used to be a cup but they got a new trophy.  But now the name makes no sense, the whole event is shambles and a lie I tell ya!

Ironbite-hope DC United doesn't have a lot of World Cup players on their team.

Does anyone like the songs that Shakira makes for FIFA World Cup?  I know that this year Pit Bull is doing the official song for FIFA, but Shakira did a song anyway.  I'm guessing because so many asked.

People are now claiming that the World Cup 2014 logo looks like the Patrick Stewart facepalm picture.

I hear America lasted a few more rounds than normal, and as a result spawned a soccer-craze. It's funny because the exact same thing happened here in 2006. The team managed to not suck quite as much as they normally do, and suddenly everyone and their dog is a soccer fan.

Gotta love bandwagons.
Title: Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup thread
Post by: ironbite on June 20, 2014, 09:08:59 pm
A few more rounds?  Uh no.  They've lasted maybe one game more then was previously thought in a group that was gonna be very difficult to get out of.  Instead, Portugal crapped the bed hard and Ghana fell to America.  As long as we beat Portugal and Germany kills Ghana dead, we get out of groups.  Which is better then most people thought.

Ironbite-though I think this year Germany's the team to beat.

Well now since we (U.S) tied with Portugal, we need to tie or beat Germany to capture the second spot in the group ranking for a chance at the playoffs.  However, if we clench the second spot, that means we will be playing Belgium in the first round who has a record of 2 wins of two games at the time of this posting.

On another note, I think it's good to see U.S. follow the World Cup more actively.  Ten to twenty years ago, you wouldn't see a following like what you see now.

If you lose to Germany, you can still get the second spot if Ghana and Portugal tie. If not, it gets trickier.

Soccer is destroying the USA. So says conservative syndicated columnist Ann Coulter.

Now I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm no great sports fan myself; I think our culture's worship of athletes goes beyond any sort of pale. I played soccer for a few years in school and found the entire sports experience toxic; for all the talk of teamwork and everyone pulling together, I was the team punching bag, blamed for any losses even if I had performed perfectly.

On the other hand, I'm tempted to start watching soccer on the general principle that if Ann Coulter hates something, it's got to have some redeeming value.

Soccer is the only sport I find remotely entertaining, incidentally.

Not entertaining enough to be a dedicated fan, which is why I don't haven't given much of a shit about this world cup.  I enjoy the discussion here, though, because I know the people here aren't rabid cheeseheads (amerifootball, I know) who are going to murder each other for supporting different teams.

Ann Coulter can stuff it.  I really wish she said that in front of a U.S. soccer fan and sees what happens.

The hero worship of athletes comes from how sports can be entertaining, and sometimes athletes can do inspirational feats of human performance.  Often the efforts of one athlete can bleed onto another not as great player, and here is this not as great player getting a big head over it.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with your high school soccer team.  I agree, what you were a part of was definitely not a team.

It's a beautiful example of choosing something to dislike, making up a reason, and then reciting random things about it as though they were justifications, half of which aren't even true.

"Soccer doesn't reward individual accomplishment!" The fuck is this, then: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Ballon_d%27Or

"Soccer is not a serious sport because it's co-ed!" Must be a huge coincidence all 736 players in the world cup are men. What are the odds!?*

"There's no risk of humiliation or injury!" I guess all those times players were carried out in stretchers were just naps.

Someone should let her know that it's OK to just not like something. Really! You don't have to make up reasons why it's against everything the country stands for, you can just say "meh, I don't like it" and be done with it.

*Because I'm me, I did the math. It comes to around 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000003%

The most hilarious part of this is that FIFA has actually banned one of the best players in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marta_%28footballer%29) from practicing or playing with men's teams and has regularly insisted that the men's and women's games be kept strictly separate at just about all levels (and countries like West Germany and Brazil, now some of the best in the women's game--Germany is the successor of West Germany--once banned the women's game altogether), while, as noted on this very board (http://fqa.digibase.ca/index.php?topic=5798.0), a number of women have played American football at the collegiate level.

I agree that Ann Coulter should have really kept her mouth about this "Soccer is not 'murican" drivel, but then again, why should I be so surprised that she put her foot in her mouth yet again?

The United States has participated in every FIFA men's soccer qualification tournament since its inaugural tournament in 1930.  You know, the time of our great-grandfathers, Ann?  By the way, we do have soldiers like myself who are interested in the World Cup tournament.  I have been able to carry on a conversation about the World Cup with fellow soldiers in my unit.

I would also like to say that the United States also has a great women's national soccer team.  We have won 2 trophies in the six FIFA women's World Cup tournaments that have taken place.  It could have been three, but we lost to a shoot-out heartbreaker with Japan in 2011.  Hopefully, if nothing else is going on, I can actually go to Canada and watch the games there.  That would be awesome.

Long story short: A guy missed the Brazil-Uruguay game in the 1950 World Cup to care for his mother (who died a few days later). This year he contacted FIFA, asking if they had a use for the ticket he still had. They exchanged it for three tickets to this year's final and will put the 1950 ticket in a museum.

That was a good game.  Tim Howard is a beast.  Also, this:

I agree.  Also someone updated the Wikipedia article on the U.S. Secretary of Defense yesterday.

However, Wikipedia admins locked and switched it back to Chuck Hagel.

Huh?  Really?

Yes.

The term soccer is a shortened form of assoccer, which is itself a shortened form of association football. The abbreviations came from the English schoolboy tradition of taking the name of something (say rugby), chopping off all but the first few syllables and appending "-er" or "-ers"; hence "rugby" became "ruggers" and "association football" became "assoccer" or, eventually, "soccer". The term is used in just about every English-speaking country that isn't England in order to distinguish the sport from other forms of football like the two rugby codes, the two gridiron codes, or Australian Rules.

(As for those being called football even though the ball is typically being carried in the arms or hands, the term comes from the need to distinguish such sports, which were played on foot, from those like polo played on horseback.)

Players and fans of the world's other six* football codes thank you.

*Yes, I know I only mentioned five other than soccer above; there's also Gaelic football.

Also, I forgot to note that the term "soccer" predates the term "football" (unmodified) as referring to the sport by about a decade.

(Post unrelated to above post.)

Here's a fun one: Part of FIFA's ranking formula is a factor that supposedly reflects the strength of the team's confederation. (See page 2 of this PDF (http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/fifafacts/r&a-wr/52/00/97/fs-590_10e_wrpoints.pdf).) It gets updated with each World Cup Finals. After the last World Cup, FIFA realized that despite European teams having won two of the last three tournaments, their formula was giving CONMEBOL a weighting of 1 and UEFA a weighting of 0.99, so they changed it to count draws as half of a win, which means that the final result gives them both a weighting of 1, even though when you dive into it you see that CONMEBOL is still stronger by FIFA's formula than UEFA.

Here's the fun part: if I've done my math right, then even in the best case scenario for Europe (where a European team wins one semi-final and loses the other, and then European teams win both the third-place game and the final--this is better because winning one of four drops South America's win percentage lower than winning none of two), European teams will have won all three World Cups taken into account and UEFA will have a weighting of 0.99 while CONMEBOL will have a weighting of 1. (The other four confederations will all be at 0.85.)

I find this highly amusing.

7-1. Damn.

On the one hand, Brazil getting destroyed was hilarious to watch. On the other, this doesn't bode well for us if we even reach the finals (last time Argentina faced Germany we lost 4-0).

And now to cheer for the Netherlands just so that a) a European team will win the World Cup for the third straight time and b) FIFA's formula will still say that South America is strictly better than Europe.

Germany won, which means Miroslav Klose doesn't have the dubious distinction of being the leading scorer in World Cup Finals without having won a World Cup.

Argentina will probably have Messi in 2018, which is why I was cheering for Germany--I want both Klose and Messi to win one, but Messi can win the next one.

When is James Rodriguez going to get his trophy?
