BSA Votes to Allow Gay Scouts

Yes, finally after years of controversy, the Boy Scouts of America finally voted to allow openly gay children into their organization. While it is true that this rule is still not extended to openly gay scoutmasters--and atheists may still be prohibited--this is still a step in the right direction and a sign that LGBT Americans are steadily becoming more accepted. And it will trigger an inevitable meltdown among the religious right, so that will be entertaining as well.

Now it's just no atheists allowed :V

I'm not particularly worried about the groups a private organization wants to exclude. That said, the BSA should be put on a level playing field with other private organizations and not be given preferential access to public facilities.

As the Boy Scouts are largely backed by the Mormon Church, I wonder how long it will be before said church dumps them.

EDIT: Or bullies them into reinstating the ban.

This is a step in the right direction, hopefully they would start allowing openly gay scout leaders in soon, since this only applies to youth and teens, not to mention those who are non-religious.

The LDS church has recently been backing off the anti-gay crusade, at least since their role in Prop 8 was uncovered.

I was always under the impression that the Boy Scouts, despite being classified a "private organization", receive taxpayer dollars and funding from the government. Is that incorrect?

It is, actually.  They're definitely a private organization, and operate as such.  One of my brothers is a long-time Scout himself.

That being said... I don't know how to feel about this.  On the one claw, good for tolerance.  On the other, as a private organization... they're entitled to do as they please.  This is gonna be a mess.

They are doing as they please. They held an internal vote and decided to scrap the ban. External pressure only consisted in form of opinions, not threats of law.

Yes Gay scouts are allowed...but not gay scoutmaster or gay parents.

Ironbite-think about that for a bit and who backs this organization.
