NRA Source: Don't blame us. Blame media and video games.
« on: December 20, 2012, 01:01:31 am »
Quote
Sources close to the issue had earlier alerted Fox News that the National Rifle Association -- which has remained silent since Newtown, chiefly to allow for a proper period for mourning -- would soon start to "push back" against the gun-control lobby.

"If we're going to have a conversation, then let's have a comprehensive conversation," said one industry source. "If we're going to talk about the Second Amendment, then let's also talk about the First Amendment, and Hollywood, and the video games that teach young kids how to shoot heads."

"If you really want to stop incidents like this," the source continued, "passing one more law is not going to do a damn thing. Columbine happened when? In 1999. Smack in the middle of the original assault-weapons ban."

Oddly enough, you would think you would want to teach kids how to shoot seeing how this is the same lot that want everyone in the country to have a gun.

So do we have a bingo card for this yet?
We got guns, video games, news media, movies, drugs, no religion in schools.  Step up and guess the next scapegoat to kick around for politics!

The concept of sitting down and having a conversation on all these possible factors is impossible for all these people who have been pingponging blame around each other.

Wake me when they provide some evidence.

I'll probably be sleeping for a long time.

Have they pulled the old favorites of Rock and Roll music and Dungeons and Dragons yet? They are a little on the dated side, often falling to the side in favour of using video games as the scapegoat, but I think you can officially call bingo when one of those two pop up.

Personally I cant believe the NRA are flogging this dead horse again. I think it is even worse that shootings have been happening so often lately that everyone was already pre-empting them on this. We all already knew they were going to pull this card. Its pretty pathetic.

This ill-informed blame game is starting to get a bit tedious now.

Of the various things mentioned in regards to gun rampages, the media part of your title (in regard to media glamorization of gun rampage perpetrators) is, in my mind, somewhat of a valid concern, and even the video you posted seems to have come to that consensus as well.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't quite yet rank it up there with socioeconomic disparity and lack of access to mental health resources in regards to causes behind gun violence (or violence in general, for that matter), and I firmly believe that how the media has reacted so far is well within their first amendment rights.  However, that doesn't mean the public can't put pressure on media outlets to voluntarily operate within a set procedure when reacting to future rampages.

If anyone needs me, I'll be shooting the limbs off of raiders and super mutants and not IRL shooting school kids in the face. Kthnxbye.

If so, don't go hatin' on the ghouls.  They are humans just like you and me.

It's totally true. When I was a lad, I had the Atari 2600 and was totally addicted to Pac-man. I was totally influenced and now all I do is devour power pellets, run circles around my cubical maze at work, and run from ghosts! Pac-man is the downfall of civilization, no doubt. And don't even get me started on Donkey Kong!

I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but the NRA should probably go off and fuck themselves.

Does anyone?

I keep hearing one side saying that violent video games increase real violence (the "desensitization effect", let's say) and the other that they reduce real violence (the "venting effect"). But ignoring the "common sense" arguments for each view, the actual evidence shows no strong effects in either direction (with some individual studies showing weak evidence for increased violence, some weak evidence against, and some no significant results).

The argument that violent video games save lives is as fallacious as the one that says they create murderers, and based on more or less the same amount of evidence.
