Title: Texas Kid Could Be Sentenced Up To Eight Years For Facebook Sarcasm
Post by: Sour Grapes on August 23, 2013, 08:09:56 pm
A kid in Texas makes a sarcastic Facebook post about shooting up a school, and eating children's hearts and of course ends it with LOL jk
and gets put in jail for eight years for making a terror threat.

Kid's on suicide watch, now.

^ That would be Rick Perry, one of the biggest assholes on the face of the planet.

Or Greg Abbot, who gives me confidence to lose more hope in this state than I had already lost.

He made a comment about how he was going to eat their hearts.  In what universe has a threat like that ever been used seriously?  Comments like those have been around forever.  But hey, I guess all the atheists on the internet better stop the sarcastic remarks about eating babies, otherwise a paranoid Canadian lady will track down where they live, report them, and then they'll get an eight year sentence for something that should've been easily and swiftly cleared up.  It's a good thing Jonathan Swift is dead, or else he might've been thrown in prison for "terrorist speech" after writing A Modest Proposal.

Seriously, who hasn't made this type of sarcastic comment before?

I want to raise my hand, but I'm reasonably sure I've made a joke along those lines before.

So basically, a man with a hero-complex shoots a black kid and gets off scot free.  Someone who is barely not a kid cracks a joke on Facebook and gets sent to jail for 8 years.

Welcome to fucking America.  Oh, and the fact that it was a Canadian who reported it didn't escape my eye, either.

I know America is the Land of the Frequent School Shootings and all, but this is just fucking stupid.

Everyone involved should be instantly fired. They've misused any power they have. Why do they deserve to keep it?

Who's going to take it away from them? You?

That link's a bit old.  Since then, an anonymous person paid his ridiculous bail and he's no longer being held in jail.  His lawyer is confident that the charges will be dropped, though there's the possibility that they have to go through appeals.

This is really, really scary. Imagine having your life ruined by making a joke on Facebook. :/

The worst part of this is that judge dickhead set the bail to half a million.  HALF A MILLION DOLLARS FOR A FUCKING FACEBOOK COMMENT!  How can anyone afford that?

Here is a more current similar case (http://gawker.com/georgia-student-banned-from-social-media-for-5-years-fo-1175044197). TYT discussed it.

What would they do if tons of people on the internet started posting obviously sarcastic/fake "threats"? Real terrorists don't usually warn and spread around what they will do. School bomb and shooting threats never turn out real. If they have no weapons what is the point of arresting?

All over a League of Legends comment that some Canadian Housewife decided was serious and took it upon herself to find this kid.

Ironbite-lovely lady eh?

The kid is alarmingly stupid.  The cops are alarmingly stupid.  It's Texas.  What's new?

Happened to a friend of mine a few years ago. Frustrated comment, someone in the US took it seriously, transatlantic police alert. We were waiting to go into the lecture when he got a surprised phonecall from his sister because the police were first going to his home address. They didn't interrupt the lecture, but he was quietly picked out of the crowd afterwards and spent several uncomfortable hours at the police station.

It's amazing the lengths people are going to in order to defend the arrest.  It basically boils down to "these are scary times so they shouldn't be able to say things like that."  Yeah, you're scared and offended that these things were said during a sensitive period, but in five years after the hysteria dies down you'll be bitching about how more rights are being stripped away and wondering how it happened.  You can't make allowances for this type of crap because you're currently paranoid, and then be surprised when those allowances aren't relinquished after the paranoia leaves.

I don't see what the kid did that's so stupid. It's an obvious joke, & he went out of his way to identify it as such. People make jokes. Sometimes jokes are offensive. Since when is that "stupid"?

The comments are really irritating me. They don't seem to get this idea of "disproportionate retribution." If the police investigated the report, they should have seen that it was an obvious joke, by a person with no signs of violence. Call him up, warn him about being careful with wisecracks like that, & call it a day. What happens to freedom of speech if satirical comments are prosecutable "threats of terrorism"?

America enjoys a good joke, but not when the punchline is TERRORISM

Well, guys, looks like I'm going to jail for life then, because I said "DIAF" a few times in 2006-7.  Clearly I would never have said such a thing unless I intended to go commit arson/murder.

Seriously, what the fucking hell?
