Title: Humanity sinks down again

Quote
A woman in north-eastern Afghanistan has been arrested for allegedly strangling her daughter-in-law for giving birth to a third daughter.

The murdered woman's husband, a member of a local militia, is also suspected of involvement but he has since fled.

The murder took place two days ago in Kunduz province. The baby girl, who is now two months old, was not hurt.

The birth of a boy is usually a cause for celebration in Afghanistan but girls are generally seen as a burden.

Some women in Afghanistan are abused if they fail to give birth to boys. And this is just the latest in a series of high-profile crimes against women in the country.

WTF?

Quote
Late last year a horrifying video emerged of the injuries suffered by a 15-year-old child bride who was locked up and tortured by her husband.

Quote
This murder took place in the village of Mahfalay, in the district of Khanabad in Kunduz.

Khanabad's police chief, Sufi Habib, told the BBC that "the mother gave birth to a third girl two months ago. The husband and mother-in-law strangled her for giving birth to a third daughter".

Senior officials told the BBC that the mother-in-law, known as Wali Hazrata, tied the feet of the 22-year old woman, who was known as Stori, while Stori's husband strangled her.

He is thought to be a fighter with an illegal armed militia which is is believed to have some political support. Local villagers say that Stori often urged her husband to lay down his arms.

"She lived in a hell not a house. But then she also asked her husband to stay home and avoid going out with these thugs," one neighbour who wished to remain anonymous told the BBC.

While militia groups have some political support, they have often been accused of violence against women, robberies and extortion.

Is this place actually worth fighting for?

Is this place actually worth fighting for?

Short answer: no. Long answer: fuck no.

So this doesn't make sense in any light.  If they believe that everything is God's will, then they're killing a woman for being God's little pawn.  If you discount the religious aspect, then you have to consider that,

A)  The woman has no control of the gender of the baby she's going to give birth to.

B)  If we want to assign blame, we should do it to the man.  Why?  His sperm hold the chromosomes that determine gender!

tl;dr:  This place is a retarded fuckhole.

you expect random people in third world countries to know how gender is determined?

Yeah the disccovery of men determining the sex is very recent

It's a tired old trope. It's always the woman's fault for the birth going wrong or not getting the right gender - regardless of how genetics works.

Ey, I take offense to the whole "humanity sinks" title.  Afghanistan is not indicative of humanity today.  At this rate, I think most of them are stuck in the Iron Age permanently...they just have some random bits of semi-modern tech.  If you consider AK-47s and old Soviet RPGs modern, that is...

The thing is, Afghanistan used to be a pretty good place. Then the Soviets invaded, then you had the mujahadeen, then the Taliban and the Northern Alliance and now the Coalition is fucking things up.

Whole place needs to be bulldozed and then replanted.  Disgusts me that we've invested so much in there and the returns we're getting would make a Crusader blush.

You know, in most other species, it is the male children that get minimized. Less competition for the adult daddies.

I would say something, but it comes off as very AROOO in my headspace, so Primus only knows what it would look like in type.

There was a plan (which I think is no longer going to materialise) of piping oil and gas through it.

This is the answer right there, that most politicans only think about.  :(

Which is why they've done bugger-all about Syria.

IIRC there are minerals in Afhganistan. Plus it is a nice base on the eastern border of Iran and provides access to the Central Asian dictatorships.

Let's not forget about the opium.

Let's not forget about the opium.

True, holding the world to hostage by saying "We now control large parts of the country where you get the plant you need for for morphine" will be very attractive to some world leaders.  Sadly.

Let's not forget about the opium.

I was going to say that.
After all if you start a war just for profit you should not ignore the money that can be made in drug business. Controlling worlds largest opium producer should give you a sizeable share of the drug market. (Or if this seems too obvious you could start burning down the fields in Afghanistan to take out your competition and then start producing opium in your own country.)

But that would be wrong. Just like starting a war for oil, diamonds, silk etc.

Actually, that honour goes to Australia (Tasmania is the world's largest supplier of legal opium poppies).

Oh yeah.  This thread was about a woman getting strangled for having a baby girl.  What with all of this opium talk derailing the conversation, I had almost forgotten!

I dont know
If that is the pursuit of utopia then why is that bad I mean I know a utopia is impossible but the pursuit of such an ideal is what drives us forward
