Title: U.S. Immigration "Crisis"
Post by: Svata on July 09, 2014, 06:50:12 pm
Lately in the US, there has been non-stop talk about what to do about the fifty thousand child illegal immigrants that have come into the country from Central America, and the "crisis" they represent. Republicans say they should be sent home, democrats say that we should let them stay. Most of them come from war-torn counries, so some are pushing for them to have refugee status. I have but one thing to say.

"Not like the brazen giant of greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning and her name
Mother of Exiles. And her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
'Keep, aincient lands, your storied pomp!' cries she
With silent lips, 'Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!'"

Now, if only I could remember where that was from....

Posted this in the wrong sub-forum. Could a mod move it?

Anti-immigration people are hypocrites.  Well, unless they're Amerindian.

Anti-immigration people are hypocrites.  Well, unless they're East African.

FTFY.

I see it as the general continuation of the fight against "those dirty poors". Immigrants have the added disadvantage of not always speaking fluent English and not having white enough skin, which further dehumanizes them in the eyes of the every-man-is-an-island crowd.

Is the East African thing on the basis that humanity as a species is meant to have originated from East Africa?

Because there is a suggestion now that the 'Out of Africa' theory could be wrong and that humanity originated in Australia.

The latter.

Personally, I find that theory more than a little dubious.  But maybe I'll turn out to be wrong.

Why would I be taking the piss? But then again there is nothing to suggest that the people who live now in the place where humanity first spread from are directly descended from those particular primates because they might have been part of an immigrant group that returned and resettled the area. Which given the fact that humans started of as nomadic is not unlikely. Really as nomads we are all immigrants.

It's from the Statue of Liberty.

It's from the Statue of Liberty.

I know. That was the point. That last bit was sarcasm.
