People Without Facebook Accounts Are 'Suspicious.'
« on: August 07, 2012, 09:05:57 am »
It’s not just love seekers who worry about what the lack of a Facebook account means. Anecdotally, I’ve heard both job seekers and employers wonder aloud about what it means if a job candidate doesn’t have a Facebook account. Does it mean they deactivated it because it was full of red flags? Are they hiding something?

Increasingly, it’s expected that everyone is on Facebook in some capacity. The idea that a Facebook resister is a potential mass murderer, flaky employee, and/or person who struggles with fidelity is obviously flawed, but it seems that a negative assumption is starting to arise about those who reject the Big Blue Giant’s siren call. Continuing to navigate life without having this digital form of identification may be like trying to get into a bar without a driver’s license.

Wow....so if you don't have  a facebook you could be a possible mass murderer or a flaky employee.....WTF seriously?

I think its just the idea of Facebook being, essentially, a global database of human information. Can you imagine what companies could do with this much data? Just imagine the things you could do...

I'll be in my bunk.

Reminds me of when companies were demanding their employees' Facebook/MySpace passwords so they could snoop on them.

This is a disturbing trend, and for that matter a threat to democracy.

What right do these people have to snoop around into our private lives in the first place?

I'm a fan of free speech and all but there should seriously be a law that people in positions of authority, whether public or private who say things like this be immediately stripped of said position and prohibited from having any significant position of authority anywhere.

What about pictures? I refrain from having any pictures of myself on Facebook. I use a Yoshi plush as my profile pic.

I'd been worried about this for quite a while now. I hoped I was wrong, but it seems the whole "Employers checking Facebook accounts" thing really is going to lead to "All prospective employees are required to have a Facebook account" eventually.

For the record, I don't have a Facebook account and do not see any reason to get one.

Word. Some day we will be herded into camps by the tens of thousands, where we will die.

I have a facebook account, but I never use it except to play one or two facebook games.

Its only real purpose for existing is providing another person for Mom's facebook games that she plays - and she hasn't played in months.

My mother, who works in the socal services, deleted her facebook account after two days. She didn't want her clients as friends, and she didn't want to ignore their requests. My mother is probably too good in her job, has too much conscience and her clients feel too personally connected to her.

I agree with her. She shouldn't have to deal with her clients in her spare time, and this is one of many valid reasons for not having a facebook account.

I have one, but I hardly ever post anything there.

I have one, and I do indeed use it. I don't feel that potential employers have a right to deny me a job based on what they see there. Of course, I realize that just because I feel this way does not make it so, and I keep all my illicit activities off facebook.

I mean, I would do that anyway though. I'm not an idiot.

What employers will learn from my Facebook: Nothing as you have to be on my friends list to see my posts. This means, in theory, I'm the same as people without a Facebook. Am I trusted more just because I use it, even though they can't see it?

Side note: What they would learn from it if I did post things publicly: My lack religious beliefs, my interests and that I support stuff like gay marriage, so nothing they would get anything out of.
