They thought it looked like a gun... I'm thought they were going to go in a different direction with why it was "inappropriate for school."

I had the same assumption. Stupid objection either way, but at least the image of the fingers held vertically could be seen as objectionable. The way he actually signs his name would not look anything like a gun

Where do they get these school administrators from, a Cracker Jack box?! It's like they grab a random idiot of the street, dress them up & make them appear "respectable" and say "Here, be an administrator/teacher/principal/mayor/other local authority/whatever!"
