Yes, Saudi Arabia has taken another baby step toward modernity, and silenced and then locked up the people who forced them into it.

Saudi Arabia (and Israel) are proof that you can get away with the most heinous and egregious abuses, atrocities, and genocides if you're a US ally (or, rather, if for geopolitical reasons the US has to suck your dick).

And it's not just the U.S. either. Saudi Arabia was elected to serve on the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Imagine if Apartheid-era South Africa was on the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
