Chicago denies bus sticker contest winner.
« on: February 15, 2012, 03:09:56 am »
The Chicago government recently held a contest to design a sticker for city buses in honor of the city's men and women in uniform.  They chose a winner, but then revoked it because some of the hands "looked like gang signs" and refused to give the winner his 1000 dollar prize money.

Wow.  Way to go Chicago.

Oh my fucking god... -_- Chicago, you fail bad.

Also, I'm betting 80% of the comments to that video are calling the kid a crybaby for being teary-eyed and strained voice during that brief interview clip.  And I'm betting that if said teenager were a girl instead of a guy, that number would be down to 20%

Yeah, just give the kid his prize, and use the artwork, the city gov't didn't have a probem with it when they decide to pick the artwork. Though to be fair they do say Chicago have a gang problem, but I feel a lot the numbers they say is bs.

This is the suspected gang sign in question.  Makes a C and a K Crip Killa... Whether or not this was the kids intention is open to interpretation I guess.

So, I have a question.  If they refused to give the kid his money because the hands look like gang symbols, why was his entry chosen to win in the first place?

The people that thought it looked like a gang symbol weren’t on the original judging panel. It was chosen, and then some asshat that sees these kind of things everywhere and has some level of authority says, “Hey, that totally looks like it could be some symbol no one else will see!” and because he has some authority of some sort, they listen.

At least, that is how this kind of thing usually happens.

The kids drawing won because it got the most votes.

The good news is that the Susana Mendoza the offical that made the decision to dump the design because it resembles to a gang sign decided to give the boy $1000 for his education out of her own pocket.  She said that making the decision to pull the design was not an easy one.

Your hand looks like something. The hands in the picture - http://i.huffpost.com/gen/497228/thumbs/r-CHICAGO-CITY-STICKER-RUNNER-UP-large570.jpg - Have completely the wrong placement, finger-wise, and are angled to show motion, as any elementary drawing book would require. The police blogger overreacted, IMO, but I don't like in Chicago.

I have a hand-sign for Chicago, and it's not exclusive to gangs.
I am an old man, and I've seen many problems, most of which never happened.

In the kids defence, if I won a thousand dollars and didn't get it, I'd cry too.
