Public option in Nevada?

Meanwhile, the Nevada legislature has passed a bill to let anyone buy into Medicaid, essentially turning it into a public option to compete with private insurers. ACA credits can be used toward the cost of such a plan; anyone not qualifying for those credits would have to pay full price.

Despite the issues with the Nevada Democratic State Convention (where no chairs were thrown), Democrats now control both houses of the state legislature; the Governor, however, is a Republican (but apparently was considered by Barack Obama to replace Antonin Scalia). The state would have to seek a waiver from certain ACA provisions to implement this plan. It is not yet known whether Gov. Sandoval will sign the bill, or whether the Trump Administration will grant the necessary waivers.

And if this all goes through and works, this might make Sen. Heller (up in 2018) too uncertain a vote for reforming the ACA.

I don't understand the significance of this part, particularly why the phrase "Democrats control both houses of the state legislature," alone, was not sufficient. Are you still salty about that?
Does anyone take Donald Trump seriously, anymore?

Because it shows that, in fact, despite the bitterness of the campaign and the hard feelings engendered, it is in fact possible for the various wings of the Democratic Party to come together and accomplish something that a lot of analysts might not have thought possible--Nevada is generally thought of as a Republican-leaning state, but it's currently got three of four House seats held by Democrats, went to Clinton against what I think many expected, has its state legislature controlled by Democrats, and is their best chance to knock off a Republican in the 2018 Senate elections with Heller.

I don't know whether or how that can be done on a national scale, but the fact that it happened in Nevada and that they then passed this shows that it is decidedly a possibility--and hopefully one that will be realized soon.

Gov. Sandoval has vetoed the bill.

EDIT: Overriding a gubernatorial veto in Nevada requires a two-thirds vote of both houses of the legislature. Democrats currently control 11 of the 21 State Senate seats, along with one Independent who caucuses with them, and 27 of the 42 State Assembly seats, leaving them unable to override the veto without Republican support.

The Assembly vote was along party lines, with two Republicans excused for a vote of 27-13.

The Senate vote was also along party lines, 12-9, with the independent voting with the Democrats in favour of the bill.
