Funnily enough, that's what I just won me a copy of. Should be fun, methinks.

Been playing through Knights of the Old Republic II. Now, I really fucking hate this game for a variety of reasons, which I can get into tomorrow for people that haven't heard of the game or liked it... I'm too tired to fully explain that one tonight. But I'm playing through it with the Restored Content Mod, which restores about 80% of the content cut from the game (and believe me, there's a lot), which makes the game worlds better. Slow going for several reasons: The game still bombs constantly (anyone who plays KotOR II knows what I'm talking about), and I'm playing through a second time, because - and this is not present in the retail cut of the game - the first time through I got the Bad Ending because I missed some vital content I didn't know they re-added into the game.

I remember that game, thought I don't remember much of what differed between the two endings.

I remember that game, thought I don't remember much of what differed between the two endings.

Because there wasn't one. It was the most nihilistic bullshit I've ever seen in a video game. The first game has you deciding the fate of the entire galaxy, and there's a huge difference in endings, both pretty satisfying. The second game... well...

The biggest problem with KotOR2 is that it was rushed for Christmas. The meddling execs pulled a massive dick move and forced the game designers to rush the game in order to maximize their potential sales (yet another reason to hate both corporate execs AND Christmas, but I digress...) This caused massive problems, as huge bugs had to go unfixed or even untested, and the entire third act of the story arc was not only rush-jobbed, it was MASSIVELY cut down. As a result, plot points go unresolved, most of the dialog makes no sense, and the ending suffered horribly.

This is made all the more frustrating because the entire plot is basically made of Checkov's Guns and foreshadowing. In fact, there are plot twists so subtle and hard to spot, that years later, reading about them makes me spit-take. For example: Ever wonder who Kreia is?

Remember when, on Malachor V, the Remote goes off and activates the four computers needed to activate the Mass Shadow Generator, and G0-T0 pins the Remote down in a corner, and the scene just... ends? Ever wonder what the fuck Darth Traya is talking about when she says, as you enter the Trayus Academy, that you'll be faced with a choice? Ever wanted to know where all the HK-50s come from? How about more about just what/who the hell Nihilus is? Want to learn more from Mandalore?

All that, and fucktons more, was supposed to all be in the fucking game. You can even find files for it if you go searching through the KotOR2 folders. Including, get this, an entire unfinished planet. So many plot threads, resolved... dialog, finished... and it all got scrapped so the game could make it out the fucking door on Christmas, and ruin the holiday for me -I mean, huge fans of KotOR who thought the sequel would be good. And it would be. It'd be better than the first game... if only it was done.

Ugh, this game... I loved KotOR so much and the sequel could have been so much more. And the reason I know this is because I'm playing through the Restored Content Mod, which restores just about all the cut content they could (not the new planet unfortunately... not enough of it was done). I decided I wanted to play through it after reading the entire Let's Play that I linked to. It covers ALL the cut content from the game that there exist any files for, and I decided I needed some closure on this fucking disappointing sequel.

Unfortunately, like I said, I got the bad ending. That's because the scene with G0-T0 and the Remote ends with HK-47 barging in on the two. G0-T0 tries to summon some HK-50s to kill him, but HK-47's been through the HK-50 Factory and instead brought with him new HK-51s who are loyal to 47, and blast the everloving fuck out of G0-T0.

That's assuming you actually unlocked the quest for it. If you're like I was, however, and didn't bother getting influence with HK (because a good guy getting influence with HK without cheating is freaking hard), and didn't go through the droid factory, HK gets his "mind" dominated by G0-T0 who goes and blasts the remote. The ending after that involves the Exile being trapped forever on Malachor V. Awesome.

If nothing else, I'd totally read through the Let's Play I linked to from the start if you like KotOR or are curious about KotOR2's cut content. It's a good read and the author's pretty funny.

There were similar problems with Neverwinter Nights II. I know a guy who knows one of the people working on that game. Apparently, they were working on the game when the higher-ups abruptly fired a bunch of managers and jumbled around the entire team. The result was that some programmers were working on things that weren't their original work. The entire game is incredibly unfinished - some quests just have no clear ending, and there are still glitches that had to be (partially) fixed with patches. Oh, and the game's graphics are only okay, but for some reason it lags like a fat beached whale.

NWN I might have shitty graphics but at least it doesn't crash every ten minutes kthxbai

Was playing Halo: Anniversery on co-op with a friend of mine recently, and I forgot how much more annoying the Flood was in that game than any of the others.

-snip KotOR2 rant-
I loved KotOR2, played it through close to a dozen times before the mod. I didn't know it was finally done, will have to get it and play again.
Kreia is a philosophical challenge not to the character, but to the player.
That said, I've stopped trying to anticipate what people around here want a while ago, I've found it makes things smoother.

Kreia is my favorite character. Here's why:

"When one relies on sight to perceive the world, it is like trying to stare at the galaxy through a crack in the door."

"When I spoke of sight before, there is a similar handicap that tends to occur among those strong in the Force. They neglect their skills. Some believe they no longer need them."

"Yes… and what are they without the Force? Take the greatest Jedi Knight, strip away the Force, and what remains? They rely on it, depend on it, more than they know. Watch as one tries to hold a blaster, as they try to hold a lightsaber, and all you will see is nothing more than a woman -- or a man. A child."

"'Sith' is a title, yes, but like you, the title is not who I am. It is not what I believe. For you… it is different. Know that there was once a Darth Traya. And that she cast aside that role, was exiled, and found a new purpose. But there must always be a Darth Traya, one that holds the knowledge of betrayal. Who has been betrayed in their heart, and will betray in turn."

"This wound … it is a physical thing, and will fade with time. It was necessary … some things may only be learned from sacrifice."

"Know that much may happen here, but above all, do not forget this—you may trust in me. We cradle each other's lives, and what threatens one of us, threatens us both. And if you find you cannot trust me, trust in your training. Trust in yourself. Never doubt what you have done. All your decisions have brought you to this point." [this one is even better when you hear what she has to say about your decision to help people causing you to doubt what you did]

"As you would pass judgment on her, I have come to pass judgment on you all. Do you wish to feel the teachings born of the Mandalorian Wars? Of all wars, of all tragedies that scream across the galaxy?"

I really liked KotOR2, until the ending. I know now why the ending is as screwed up as it is, but when I first played the game, I didn't know. So I got to the end and could only think "uh, what just happened?" It really ruined the game for me, so much so that I cannot bring myself to play it again. (I have it on the original Xbox, so cannot get the mods that fix it.)

Why the fuck is this at the bottom of the page?  FUCK THAT JANK.

I got an update for you motherfuckers, ArenaNet has finally set a rough date for the open beta for Guild Wars 2.  When's that, you may ask?  March/April of this year.  I dunno about you guys, but I'm certainly testing this bitch when they pop the beta.  Five god damned years of development, this bastard had better be awesome.

Still no news on Thief 4, that I'm aware of, though.  Okay, Eidos...what the fuck's the holdup?  The last Deus Ex game came and went already.  What's taking you so fucking long?  Is it so much to ask for some teaser content or something by this time?  Something to whet my whistle a bit while I wait?  I don't mind a long development cycle, by all means, take your time and polish the game up so it can be set apart from its peers by having a good, fairly stable release...but, come on.  The fans need some kinda morsels to keep our appetites going.

My copy doesn't lag or crash. *shrug* There are issues with some of the quests feeling... unfinished? And a lot of it does feel rushed. I blame the stupid execs.
