Students suspended for biking to school.

UPDATE: Thanks to B-Man for providing this update.  The principal has apologized for her reaction.

http://grist.org/list/high-school-seniors-suspended-for-biking-to-school/

Quote
On Monday, 64 Kenowa Hill High School seniors biked to school in Walker, Mich. Nice, right? Well, the principal didn’t think so. She suspended the kids for the day and threatened to keep them from walking in their graduation ceremony.

...

The group ride was conceived as a less-destructive alternative to the traditional vandalize-the-school, get-everyone-out-of-class brand of senior pranks.

...

Someone with a cell phone captured her panicking over the risk the students took: (link to video in article)

“If you and your parents don’t have sense enough to know your brains could end up splattered on Three Mile and Kinney, Fruit Ridge, then maybe that’s my responsibility,” she is heard telling students on the cellphone video obtained by 24 Hour News 8.

Now, the kids were actually pretty safe because they had a police escort to school. The worst consequences of the biking were some traffic delays, which made some teachers and students late for school (which I believe is one of the classic senior prank goals — delay of class, if not all-out chaos that means all students miss a day of school).

Okay, let me get this straight.

1. The students biked to school in a "bike parade".  Safety in numbers.

2. The students actually called proper authorities to let them know that they were going to do this, and got an escort as a result.  The mayor outright supported this and handed out donuts.

3. The worst thing that happened was that a couple of teachers were late to class, which isn't unusual for end of school year pranks.

To be honest, it sounds like they actually know how to be freaking safe.  They've got good heads.  And the principal's main complaint is that they were reckless and unsafe?

Dude, what the fuck.

They even cleared it with the police? That is a lot more forethought than I would have had.

And, yeah, biking to school—something that is earth friendly, and helps keep you fit. Two big concerns with the country of late. I should like to think that sort of thing would be encouraged.

The amount of anti-bike sentiment out there is staggering.

My school has a rule against riding a bike to school completely. It's on the outer edge of a small town and many students live a fair distance away so it doesn't matter too much, but there are a couple dozen kids that walk to school every day. There's probably twice as many that could ride a bike to school.

The fact that they called the police and mayor to get it okay'd shows that they thought this through more than most kids would have. One wonders why the principal didn't know. It seems some of the teachers knew all about it. Did she not get the message? Does she not pay attention or not care?
History is full of maniacs, my friend, men and women of intelect, highly perceptive individuals, who's brilliant minds know neither restraint nor taboo. Such notions are the devils we must slay for the edification of pony-kind. Even if said edification means violating the rules of decency, society, and rightousness itself.

I would be fighting this if I were one of the students.  They rode their bikes to school together and even let the police know what was going on.  I clearly don't see ANY reason or know what grounds they could stand on for those suspensions.

I was thinking the same thing.  My high school had students that biked, and even had bike racks for students to chain their bikes on.  And this is a fairly large and busy town.

My middle school had a giant shed just for bike racks.

Lots of bikers where I went to school... then again, it was Oregon.  People looked at you weird if you DIDN'T own a bike.
There is light and darkness in the world, to be sure.  However, there's no harm to be had in walking in the shade or shadows.

My very first primary school had bike racks for the students, and it was a public school in a bogan town.

Apparently because "IT'S NOT SAAAAAFEEEEE!!"

I would imagine most of the students were wearing helmets, but that's at best conjecture :/ Either way, the safety steps they DID take are impressive.
