Smart Move by the US Senate
« on: February 12, 2012, 03:56:27 am »
In a smart move by the senate...the STOCK ACT Passes!

Quote
The STOCK Act - legislation to bar members of Congress from trading stocks based on nonpublic information they have obtained in the course of their congressional work - passed the Senate Thursday in a 96 to 3 vote.

Quote
One criticism of the original legislation - raised by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor - was that the original bill did not also focus on the executive branch. That issue seems to have been addressed: An amendment to extend the new rules to cover the executive branch passed on Thursday 58-41.

I don't see how they'll stop it. Made it illegal, sure, found some way to end it, very doubtful. Kinda like online piracy. You can make it illegal, but it'll never be stopped. Even if they couldn't play stocks themselves, they can always go through a third party

Meh it really does nothing but tell the public that they're too stupid to realize the amount of corruption in the Congress today.

Ironbite-nothing will change but I'm betting they'll use this as an excuse to impeach Obama.

The fact that it passed so easily means there is a laughably obvious loophole or workaround.

While that's probably true, there's also the "So obviously evil that not voting for it will screw you" factor. I kninda wanna know who those three are.

I agree with VS and Distind. Also, this is only one small part of corruption. One could easily buy stocks and then transfer them once the Congressperson's term finishes.

You’d have thought certain provisions of the NDAA were “so obviously evil” as well…

Yeah, I don't buy that. There's been so many bills that have gone through that not voting for them would be "obviously evil" yet almost all Republicans voted it down. Like VS said, there's probably some huge loophole

Or just have your spouse buy them.

Not really, they can just write it off as homeland defense.

Yeah, and you can write off not restricting stock trades as “Defense of the Free Market.”

I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

Not really, because what this is would be a crime if they got the information through any other method, now they're simply making it explicit that yes, this is actually a crime. Senators have to play by the same rules as everyone else.

That is hardly true of the police, the military or intelligence agencies.

The GOP voted down giving healthcare benefits to 9/11 first responders THREE TIMES.

I don't think there's anything "so obviously evil to vote against" that they wouldn't.
