Assuming there's any substance to the rumor, it wouldn't surprise me. They're both viciously anti-gay and they aren't afraid to say so.

My cousin popped into my room at least 25 times to "update" me during the course of the Pope's Cuba and US visit. Sigh. We're not even Catholic. See my post last week in Things that Annoy You.

Anyway, what with the Pope having a swarm of paparazzi on him 24/7 during this tour, how the fuck could he even lift his robe to take a piss without them knowing? Much less visit Kim Davis.

I hope you're right. *sigh* I knew he was against SSM & Abortion but I never thought of him as one who focused heavily on those issues.

I like him for standing up for the poor, lambasting unfettered Capitalism, the GOP and greedy fat cats and demanding that we love and help one another and even trying to walk that walk.

I don't like how he's sympathetic to Kim Davis. So much for "Who am I to Judge".

That said, I hope you're right. Many reports about what he said or did tend to be "What Vatican officials said or did even if it contradicts what the Pope said or did".

On the one hand, getting a meeting with the Pope means very little; pretty much every minor celebrity and politician in Argentina has done it. Post-becoming-pope, I mean, not just when he was archbishop.

On the other hand, that was in Rome, not during an international tour.

I've said it before to my friends who idolize him, and I'll say it again here.

Francis isn't special. He isn't some super-liberal pope here to bring the church into the 21st century. All he is is more of the same, except he isn't being an asshole about it. He gave the same old tired Catholic doctrine of "gay is k as long as you either have no sex at all ever forever, or you do a nice loveless marriage for the children." Or comparing... what was it? Gender something? Can't remember the phrase he used, but he compared trans people to nuclear weapons. The whole socialist austere aspect is nice but... he is just more of the same and I can't even say I'm dissapointed.

Any changes he makes are superficial. Until he does something about sheltering pedophiles, rejecting condoms, telling gays they have to be unhappy, et cetera, he can officiate all the Holy Thursday masses at prisons and wash as many Muslims' feet at said masses as he wants, he's still not any better than his predecessors.

EDIT: And it says a heck of a lot more about said higher-ups than it does about the Pope that they're scared of even those meaningless changes.

In some aspects he's just another homophobic pope, but in others he's leftist enough to seriously freak out the conservatives.

And for certain people who adhere to a downright stunning level of tribalism and purity belief, he's a confusing creature who elicits extreme anger.

IMO, he's not perfect, but he's not either a superheroic individual or some sort of supervillain with a secret archconservative plan.

He's a fine Pope with some fairly progressive ideas.  But on the issues that really matter, he's 50/50.  And that just terrifies some people on both sides.

Ironbite-sorry folks...Pope ain't gonna be supporting gay rights any time soon.
