Madrid Catholics mad about new art exhibit...
« on: February 21, 2012, 09:58:37 pm »
...because it's got *gasp* nuns in lingerie!
Quote
Around 50 protesters demonstrated outside the Fresh gallery Friday evening bearing placards reading "For a unified and Catholic Spain" and "God Exists".
"Respect the sacred, no to blasphemy," they shouted.

"They don't dare with the Muslims," said 78-year-old Michel Soto, a retired engineer. "The dare with us because we are pacifists."
The article goes on to say that someone threw bottles of petrol through a museum skylight in retaliation, though fortunately the fire didn't spread very well. There was also a petition to the mayor to shut down the event, which was quickly denied. I gotta say, I find it hard to see a mayor in the US doing the same thing, outside of LA or NYC perhaps, so it's nice to see that response.

For anyone (undoubtedly) interested, here's a link to the museum's website, and some pictures of the photography in question. Seeing as it's for a museum in Spain, the whole site is in Spanish, though I'm guessing that's not why a lot of you clicked that link, is it? ;)
Her3tik, you have groupies.

There are a number of ways, though my favourite is simply to take them by surprise. They're just walking down the street, minding their own business when suddenly, WHACK! Penis to the face.

Looks less like a nun in lingerie and more like a couple with a naughty nun fetish. I would think the people throwing a fuss would have a better idea of what to expect from an exhibit called “Obscenity.” They have to realize that they are just giving it more publicity than it would otherwise have, right?

This is a statue of Jesus in a tub of piss. No seriously. I find it relevant.

This is the baby Jesus butt plug:

I don't recall anyone freaking or hurling molotovs over these.
History is full of maniacs, my friend, men and women of intelect, highly perceptive individuals, who's brilliant minds know neither restraint nor taboo. Such notions are the devils we must slay for the edification of pony-kind. Even if said edification means violating the rules of decency, society, and rightousness itself.

They're probably too naive to know they exist in the first place. :P

Oh no they definitely went ape shit over "Piss Christ." I had to research that piece for a contemporary art class I took in college. There was definitely some negative back lash over it despite the artist coming out and saying it actually wasn't a vat of piss that the crucifix was submerged in.

But on Friday afternoon somepony smashed the building's skylight and threw two bottles filled with petrol inside, but the fire did not take.

Pacifists, eh?  Also, the art's subject matter is exactly what it says on the tin.  I swear, these people have their panties in such a tight twist that they totally fucking miss the point.

Wasn't Piss Christ permanently damaged about a year or so ago?

If your art exhibit gets people to protest outside, you are doing it right.
I thought it was common knowledge that art is supposed to be evocative and sensational. It is supposed to stir ones emotions and thoughts. If you are getting your panties in a knot about it, it is doing what it is supposed to.

Although, after clicking the link, I must say personally, the quality is very poor. It looks more like cheap fetish soft core porn than art. Still, it was a good idea. Needed a better execution though.

It also could have used models that didn't look like they had boxed a few rounds with an Ugly Ent. Between that and the poor art direction, I'm surprised it could find a home anywhere, let alone somewhere people could get riled up enough to care.

Borgia. But, then, that was also 500 years ago, and I'm not sure it's especially germane to this matter. (Although it might be Italiane.)

Anyway, I don't really consider piss Christ to be "art", although I won't deny that it's a valid form of expression. I guess. I don't know what the Obscenity exhibit actually looks like, but from the description it sounds sexy.

Interestingly, the models, Alaska and Rossy de Palma, go a long way to highlighting the differences in entertainment standards (and possibly even beauty) between Spain and the US.
