Children from more affluent backgrounds are the A-grade students before school even starts, and then simply maintain their position through the school years. Addressing the divide as early as possible looks necessary, and urgent.

For American society, it's for a very obvious reason. Affluent kids have more resources than poorer kids. The article doesn't touch on this, but in other the countries where the social mobility is better like Finland and Denmark, all kids overall perform better in schools. So our increasing income gap may be part¹ of the problem.
