Techcrunch: The Hooters of Computers
« on: September 27, 2013, 01:24:08 am »
The failure and corruption of gatekeepers as a symptom of a much greater problem which has been publicly demonstrated by the Linux community. Gatekeepers are persons of power within a cultural structure who can shut down and shut out ‘the trash’, whether they be individuals or groups, of a community. They can effectively silence messages deemed harmful and isolate the trash from resources.

I will exemplify:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFsRccQ3Q7U

Elias Bizannes, a TechCrunch judge was corrupt. He manipulated the submission system so that his buddies can push their sexually hostile content. Then tried to justify it with derp comments which reinforced a stereotype of Australians.

The other three judges and management failed as gatekeepers because they had the ability to shut down Elias Bizannes as they knew and expressed anger over the content he judged as acceptable. They were inherently part of the screening process, they failed to act and allowed it.

To trace the cause of a problem one must find the initiating action. The creation of Titstare was the first action, the following action was Elias Bizannes abusing his position as a judge to allow Titstare and the third action was the failure of the other three judges and management. The sad truth of the matter is that the members of Linux Community present at the TechCrunch even were more responsible for this problem that the AOL backed corporate suites because that initiated and were part of allowing such to occur.

Meet Nicu Buculei, responsible for the Fedora Upskirt Incident and an example that the same misogynistic same behavior is present and tolerated in the communities’ specific to any given Linux distro.

1) Nicu Buculei is a corrupt gatekeeper, he used his position to post sexual harassment believing it to be acceptable. Given the amount of users who rushed to his defense verses those who opposed him, it was deemed acceptable.

2) Notice that I used a picture of him with his child. This is outside the scope of the stereotype that the trash of the Linux Community are just sexually and socially immature males. He is mature, he is married and thus had prolonged social and sexual contact with women. Despite all of this he still targeted women on a public bus and refused to take down the picture he uploaded thus he is still misogynistic.

3) Other gatekeepers on Fedora Planet either failed to act or were corrupt as it is still syndicated, one even defended him publically! No one forced them to do so, they willing chose to do so. Private messages are not good enough, cover-ups do not solve the problem. Anyone who posts sexual harassment needs to be thrown the fuck out. Such should be publically stated policy as it will dispel the stereotype mentioned above and improve the community.

Not sure what any of this has to do with Linux, but okay :|

Way to perpetuate the stereotype.
That said, I've stopped trying to anticipate what people around here want a while ago, I've found it makes things smoother.
For I was an hungred, and ye told me to pull myself up by my bootstraps: I was thirsty, and ye demanded payment for the privilege of thine urine: I was a stranger, and ye deported me: naked, and ye arrested me for indecency.

I believe TechCrunch is a supporter of Linux, or at least they seem to hang around its cons.

So Techcrunch did what again? Not seeing what the big deal is here.

What I see is grown men making asses of themselves and displaying the maturity level and humor of a 12 year old. Making a boob or wanking joke is one thing, but what they did wasn't even particularly funny other than laughing at them making asses of themselves. It seems like they were going for "heh heh boobies".

You want to make a dirty joke? Fine. You want to make a joke at a professional presentation at a tech conference? Great. Putting those together isn't a good idea unless you're at the porn and sex toys conference, in which case it's probably par for the course.
History is full of maniacs, my friend, men and women of intelect, highly perceptive individuals, who's brilliant minds know neither restraint nor taboo. Such notions are the devils we must slay for the edification of pony-kind. Even if said edification means violating the rules of decency, society, and rightousness itself.

Why get flustered over immature behavior at a tech conference when there are far, far worse things elsewhere in society to be worried about?

Congrats, you just used the one of the most common argumentative fallacies on the internet.

Also why am I not surprised that an r/atheism regular is excusing sexism and objectification of women on the basis of "there are worse things happening"?
Mockery of ideas you don't comprehend or understand is the surest mark of unintelligence.

While the Linux community has its trash, I can't see a reason to boycott Ubuntu and Arch until these bastards repent. You will find Windows or Mac users that would say the same thing, and the 'Nix developers I mentioned provide a functional operating system that's free of charge. I suppose highlighting it, however, would give attention and raise the bar for the Linux community.

Giving you a harder time to find something to hate by people who use Linux.

I should have made this post more brief, I will summarize. The failure and corruption of gatekeepers as a symptom of a much greater problem which has been publically demonstrated by the Linux community. Gatekeepers are persons of power within a cultural structure who can shut down and shut out ‘the trash’, whether they be individuals or groups, of a community. They can effectively silence messages deemed harmful and isolate the trash from resources.

I will exemplify:

Now I must put a question to you. What is more indicative of a problem with a culture, individual comments or an authorized project?

Linux is a kernel, not a social movement. It doesn't need gatekeepers, much less the social justice police.

Pay attention, darling. He's talking about the Linux community. This is one of those strange times where I not only understand TIM, but actually...kinda agree with him.

Illusive, that's pretty much what you should have done. The photos and quotes kinds cluttered up the point of your post, but your last post was a whole lot clearer.

I did agree that highlighting these individuals was the right thing to do. I'm pleased about the shame level that Techcrunch invited upon themselves for allowing sleazy apps, and I hope this trend continues. On the other hand, should I rally a boycott of Ubuntu and Arch because of these guys? I don't think you'll be finding the Titstare app in their respective repos anytime in the near future.
