Santorum Wins Kansas

Quote from: Frothy
While on the campaign trail in Kansas on Friday, Santorum took aim at rival Republican contender Romney and likened the former Massachusetts governor to President Barack Obama. He cast himself as the only choice for conservatives in the race for the White House.

Santorum said, "We already have one president who doesn't tell the truth to the American people. We don't need another." He added, "Gov. Romney reinvents himself for whatever the political occasion calls for."

I'm just going to quote my reaction from the IRC:

<Eniliad> Ack, Santorum won the thing
<Eniliad> In Kansas :/
<Shane_for_Wax> The thing?
<Eniliad> Primary race
<Eniliad> I guess it makes sense, I mean, Dorothy had to be whisked away from Kansas into the magical land of rainbows and sunshine.
<Eniliad> Also the entire state is sepia.
<Eniliad> And tornadoes.

Does this really need a thread? Not to be rude, but Super Tuesday, Florida, Santorum's "come-from-behind-climactic-surge" in Missouri, Minnesota, and Colorado, nor Ohio got any primary threads; why Kansas? Santorum's victory doesn't come as a surprise, he does well in the mid-western states and did well in neighboring states Oklahoma, Colorado, and Missouri. The only thing that gives Kansas any kind of significance is that it was winner take all.

And don't we want Santorum doing relatively well? Paul's gonna stay in the race until the convention as he did in 2008 and may draw enough delegates to keep the nomination from being won. Gingrich may or may not stay in (he has no prospects after Georgia and is in a relative tie in the next few southern contests, but he is also an egomaniac who will stay in just because he feels entitled to the nomination), but if Gingrich drops out, most of his support will go to Santorum and that could lead to a brokered convention, especially if Romney loses California. I mean, I voted for Paul on Super Tuesday, not because I like him in the least, but because the idea of trolling the GOP was too good to pass up.

I'm personally hoping that Romney wins the nomination, the fundies and teabaggers freak out about "We don't want no Mormon in the White House," split off to form a third party, nominate Santorum, and split the Republican vote to give Obama a landslide victory.

It's lose-lose for the Republicans. The more interesting question is, do these loses matter in the long term (2014), do they translate into a win-win for the Democrats, and do they translate into a win-win for sane politics.
That said, I've stopped trying to anticipate what people around here want a while ago, I've found it makes things smoother.

I'm not concerned about the Presidential nomination. Obama's going to win. There really isn't much doubt about that at this point.

I want to know how this series of elections will affect the makeup of Congress. Specifically, whether or not the Republicans will keep their majority status.

This. All the other candidates are too busy fighting each other and exhausting their funds. The fact that Gingrich is staying in the race just to spite Romney also adds to this.

Santorum should run for prohibition party. Although they may be not extreme enough for him.

Maybe he can make his own party the crazy wingnut party.
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

While it is a lose-lose, I think the primary are still relavent in one regard.

If Romney gets the nomination and loses, the teabaggers will blame the loss on the idea that Romney is not a Real Republican™[/derp], thus, continuing to double down on their own rhetoric and continuing to obstruct the legislative process with filibusters against legislation that the American public supports and would not have been controversial before 2009.

If Santorum gets the nomination and loses, there is a sliver of hope that they may get it through their heads that the rest of the nation *gasp* doesn't subscribe to their ideology.

The Democrats should do everything in their power to help Santorum win the nomination.

No chance. Just like Bush, if Santorum fails he will have been a 'RINO' and a 'moderate' and 'not Republican enough'.

In calling Sanatarium a RINO, they're daming themselves though.  Because he is "the" candidate as far as their concerned.  The fact that nobody on the left or center will support him doesn't resonate with these idiots.

He's a RINO in that he's too extreme.
