Title: Kingdom of Amalur Demo
Post by: Shano on January 18, 2012, 06:24:56 pm
I just finished the demo (mainly to obtain the bonus items in ME3). If you have played it, what are your thoughts on it?

I personally am not completely sold. I do find the lore world interesting (I never read Salvatore so I had no previous knowledge) and with a great promise. Just not sure the game is long (and wide?) enough to make a really compelling story. It is possible that there are enough areas for a great development but comparing it to skyrim and/or WoW it feels a tad bit small.
I personally do not have very strict definition of what game must have to qualify as an RPG. Like many people call the final fantasy series RPG (Japanese RPG to be precise) but the only thing they have in terms of role-playing is which characters you select in your party. And many people are against qualifying the ME series as RPG games. What do you think?
Graphics are very stylized (and probably sub-par for today's standarts quality wise) - I personally felt they were of almost identical to WoW style.
Combat was quite interesting. Melee magic is a rather rare to see (I do not count the bound weapons in skyrim as melee magic to be honest...) and there are a lot of customization options for the character. Also the idea of a universalist who doesn't actually suck is rather cool (I do not know whether they will really not suck by end game though).
There are allegedly many factions you can become member of allowing for particular playstyle choices but the demo definitively did not allow you to explore any so I have no idea how well this will work out. Some people on a couple of forums I read seem to feel like the system will be very similar to Skyrim.

Ok. That's my current opinion.

As I've read it, people are comparing it to be an 'adult Fable'.

I liked it myself and have been talking to one of the devs for it. I've never been a Salvatore fan (kinda long-winded) but he does weave a good tale. The combat is pretty slick, too.

I pre-ordered it myself. If you liked Morrowind/Oblivion then you might want to try for this considering who all is a part of the dev team. Jus' sayiiiin.

One not very cool thing that happened was that the ME3 demo is coming out on 14th of February. They had promised an item for Kingdom of Amalur if you play the demo of ME3 and said item is to be a very good entry level item. However Kingdom of Amalur is coming out before the demo of ME3, which means that this item will be obsolete if you get the game on release and play it at least a little bit (since you will probably start getting better items after a couple of days of play). I wonder if they will resolve this somehow or what...

Well, I preordered Kingdom of Amalur today. Hope I don't regret it :).

Played the demo for the ME3 items.

I'm quite impressed, although it does look more like an unfinished beta (characters disappearing, attacks not being registered, wonky facial gestures etc.)

I might pick this up when it's on sale.

If I recall correctly from the man I've been talking to, it is a very early build of the game that was pushed out as a demo. Also, Shano, I didn't expect you to pre-order it. Since you did say earlier you weren't sure it was worth it.

I just finished the demo. After hearing it compared to Elder Scrolls, I was expecting a little more open-world feel. However, I know it could get more open as I progress, so I'm not holding that against the game. Combat is a little wonky, but that's probably something I would get a feel for as I play longer.

Overall, I suspect I will be pre-ordering this game.
