Julian Assange granted asylum by Ecuador
« on: August 17, 2012, 11:38:52 pm »
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/17/world/americas/ecuador-to-let-assange-stay-in-its-embassy.html?_r=1&hp

TL;DR: Julian Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for several months in order to avoid extradition to Sweden (and potentially the to the US afterwards, where he faces the death penalty for the Iraq War leaks in 2010) Yesterday, Ecuador's foreign minister announced that the country would grant Assange diplomatic asylum in this statement:
“The government of Ecuador, faithful to its tradition of protecting those who seek refuge in its territory or in its diplomatic missions, has decided to grant diplomatic asylum to Julian Assange,” he said, reading from a government communiqué. He added, “There are indications to presume that there could be political persecution,” and said Mr. Assange would not get a fair trial in the United States and could face the death penalty there.
Because of this, he is protected from being arrested by the UK while in the embassy. The UK, US and Sweden are substantially enraged. Britain is refusing to let him leave the country, leaving him trapped in the embassy. Ecuadorian officials have released a statement claiming that Britain has threatened to revoke their immunity and storm the embassy, which would effectively violate the Vienna Convention.

Good.

Furthermore, I would like to point out that the Ecuadorian government's actions can be viewed as part of a broader trend of Latin American countries no longer giving a fuck what the USA thinks of them.

I think that's just it. I don't think that the government of Ecuador particularly cares about Assange. This move was Ecuador giving the middle finger to American and British imperialism.

Good for Ecuador really this is really good for them.  Frankly this shouldn't have to happen since really he didn't commit any crime other then sex by surprise which is a very minor crime in Sweden (5000 krogen fine)

I say good on Ecuador. I think this is them spitting in Britain's eye for that last threat. I guess governments don't like being called out on their shenanigans. I realize their reasons aren't so much being humanitarians as it is flipping the middle finger to the US and Britain, but it's a good move regardless.

Not that many murderers get the death penalty.

Because of terrorism laws and such couldn't they not give him a trial if he was extradited to the US because he committed treason or terrorism? Couldn't they imprison him indefinitely or outright kill him without needing the approval of any court?
History is full of maniacs, my friend, men and women of intelect, highly perceptive individuals, who's brilliant minds know neither restraint nor taboo. Such notions are the devils we must slay for the edification of pony-kind. Even if said edification means violating the rules of decency, society, and rightousness itself.

Unlikely. And I think Ecuador is exaggerating about the whole death penalty thing. Also, Assange isn't American, and therefore cannot be convicted of treason. Assange COULD be tried for espionage.

Anyways, from what I hear of the smear campaign against him, it's like Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking, the last of which in this case is not flushing the toilet.

To an extent, it doesn't matter. The American government probably doesn't care what they charge him with as long he is in jail/dead. Even if US special forces stormed the embassy and shot him, it won't matter. The US will justify it, other countries will condemn it and the only people pissed will be people who never liked the US in the first place.

He could be charged with espionage, which depending on the counts in the indictment, may be charged as a capital offense.

Of course we know this is all politically motivated.  The U.S. and U.K. view Assange as a fly in the ointment, and wish to neutralize him.

Aren't the UK still refusing to give him safe passage out of the country though?
