Damn that's fucked up. I thought naval tradition was that the captain sank with the ship? That is that the captain and crew stay aboard in order to help others out.

To be fair, the accusation of showboating is a little unfair.  It's considered traditional for Italian cruiseships to do that.  It's called the inchino, or "taking a bow."  So, while that was stupid, it's unfair to blame Schettino specifically for that.  Hopefully they'll stop doing that shit now.

His subsequent actions are, of course, base cowardice.  He deserves to go to prison.
