Global economic collapse?
« on: June 10, 2012, 04:22:04 pm »
I'm not much for these "OMG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!!!111!!" stories, but I am curious as to what anyone else thinks about the idea that the global economy could collapse. Specifically, the story in question here details how some rich people are putting their money in (German) accounts with 0% interest rates because they're scared of losing it all in a major collapse. To me, it sounds like over-panicked scare tactics meant to drum up more viewers. I don't honestly think that, as bad as things seem, they're going to descend to the level of complete collapse; this mess seems to geared towards putting all the money in the hands of a few than simply making it disappear, though I suppose that may be a mere semantic difference if you're not the one getting the money.

Also, as someone who wants to see the plot of Fight Club played out IRL, I have a hard time seeing this as a completely bad thing, if not entirely deserved by civilization as a whole.

My dad thinks that the world economy is on the verge of collapse because the US is using a fiat money system issued by the Federal Reserve (which is a hate crime against the middle class) instead of relying on gold and silver, and that once the dollarpocalypse happens, gold will become the most valuable commodity for some reason in a world of people scavenging to survive. But I don't think that counts.

I don't understand why I repeatedly hear (from various sources - mostly survivalist nutcases) that gold will become the most valuable commodity if we reach an economic or nucelar apocolypse. I can't eat gold.

Wouldn't the most valuable commidity be fresh water or seeds for food or something? That is what would make sense to me. What the fuck am I going to buy with the gold if there is no stores, manufacturing, electricity, etc. etc.?

If there is some sort of financial meltdown and economic apocalypse, I would rather have canned food, gasoline, toilet paper, and pharmaceuticals stockpiled than precious metals.  (Cigarettes and booze would probably be valuable as well.)

As far as the whole OMG ZERO INTEREST RATE thing is concerned, I'm not sure how prevalent a problem this is.  Rich people have been investing their money abroad for a long time, and the current crisis is unlikely to change that.  Good investors seek to maximize returns and minimize losses, and smart investors accomplish that by diversifying investments--spreading their money out over multiple investments in multiple countries and industries, so that at the very least, they don't lose everything.

Interest rates on bonds, certificates of deposit, and similar investments here in the USA are pathetic right now.  Bernanke has decided to maintain the Zero Interest Rate Policy until at least 1st quarter 2014.  I'm not so sure that's the best move, because banks are still reluctant to lend and people are reluctant to save and invest.  On the other hand, if the Fed raises the interest rates, it could slow GDP growth down even further.  They are caught between Scylla and Charybdis, so to speak.

Even the major developing economies (e.g. China, India, etc.) seem to be slowing down, largely in response to weak demand in the developed world.  Eventually, it will bottom out--and at that point, governments will have to respond, or risk facing an "Arab Spring" type of situation in their own countries.

Unfortunately you can't eat gold.

Right now people are buying gold why?  Simply because it is worth a lot of dollars.  Gold and Paper money both have value because we all agree they do.  If we see a total economic collapse we will be back to bartering and useful items like food will be king.

That being said, if things got so bad I think countries would take huge steps to keep things going including nationalizing banks, forgiving dept and a number of other things.

Maybe you should remind your father that economic collapses occurred under the old standard as well.

Ask your Dad these questions...

1) Can you eat gold?

2)Did you know if you took all the gold in the world and converted it into standard  6"x3"x2" bars with 36 cubic inches of volume it would barely fill a an entire Starbucks?

If the global economy were to collapse, it doesn't matter where the rich put their accounts, they'll still lose it.

The reason they use so many foreign accounts is they pay nothing to put their money there and have none of it to pay taxes on in the US

I suggest we learn to make ethanol stills and work on getting vehicles to run on them. While we're at it, we may need to set up some bunkers. [/d20 Apocalypse]

Oh, and bottlecaps. Lots and lots of bottlecaps.
