Mothers Against Drunk Driving: EPIC FAIL
« on: October 21, 2013, 03:48:26 pm »
The latest zero tolerance bullshit comes from Massachusetts, where an honor student was punished for driving her drunk friend home..  This was even after the police cleared her and saw that she wasn't drunk, apparently, being at the party makes you just as guilty.

So you'd think a group like Mothers Against Drunk Driving would be supportive of this girl.  After all, she did prevent someone from driving home drunk.  But noooooooooooooooo!!!  They side with the school and their zero intellegence policies.  I never liked MADD.  They always struck me as some hysterical "please think of the children!!!"  looneys.  But this just comfirms what I thought.  They make as much sense as one million moms (those homophobic bitches who were against Ellen and JCPenney).

I was going to comment, but someone over on MADD's own blog where they were supporting the punishment summed it up nicely, as reported in the second link:

Quote
MADD has been renamed “Mothers Against Designated Drivers”. Jan, age does not make an adult. What Erin did was very responsible.

Erin didn't have to call an adult, she was a legal driver doing the adult thing. This punishment just goes to show why I have a frothing hatred of zero tolerance policies. The people who have them don't give two shits about doing the right or just thing, they just want a way to cover their asses.

The group that has its act together is DAM (Mothers Against Dyslexia).

The principal obviously doesn't care about road safety. Therefore, he should have his driver's license revoked. Permanently.

And yet again, we have solid proof that zero tolerance means zero intelligence.

I read the comments for that article and it seems two (or, more likely, one sockpuppetting) jackasses are trying to claim the girl was at the party, drank enough to puke, et cetera. Why do people do this shit? Of course, this ass has no response at all to everyone else pointing out that even the goddamn cops think otherwise.

They claim that there were no sobriety tests done at the scene, so there's no way to verify whether what the cops said was the truth.  And how do they know this?  Because their kids told them that, of course.

"Mothers Against Drunk Driving"? I'm glad we have an organization like this to remind us that drunk driving is indeed bad.

MADD was started by a mother who lost her child to a drunk driving accident. So yeah, it basically is a hysterical "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" campaign.

They're responsible for the ridiculously high age requirement across America for drinking alcohol. Before then, states were allowed to set their own drinking ages.

This is idiotic. If kids think that their sober friends are going to rat them out, they're less likely to call someone for a ride home when they've been drinking, leaving them more likely to drive drunk, ride as a passenger with a drunk driver, or attempt to walk home in a vulnerable state. If teens are going to drink -- and they will, regardless of how many punishments you try to throw at them -- the number one priority should be getting them home safely, not maximizing punishment.

It's odd. The blog post doesn't say a word against Erin, but rather praises her. FoxNews.com says Withers sided with the school, but the actual quotes only say she supports the school's effort to stop underage drinking through zero tolerance. Now, that could be exactly what it's presented as, but it could also be that Withers made a generic comment about zero tolerance rather than taking sides in a case where she admits she did not have all the information.

I may be giving Withers too much in terms of benefit of the doubt here, but I'm considering the possibility this might be a quote mine. Not that I'd question the journalistic standards of Fox News, of course.

Yeah, fuck them.  The sad thing is that when ever I try to discuss how ridiculous MADD is with a lot of people, I get treated like a heartless bastard.  Like somehow we have no right to criticize them because some of them lost loved ones to drunk driving.

Not that I wouldn't be homicidal if I lost someone I cared about to some asshole drunk driver, but I'll be damned if I support an organization like MADD.

Just curious, do you think drunk driving isn't a serious issue, or do you just have a beef with MADD?

You guys are getting this angle from a FOX News interview. Reminds me of how easily the public turned against ACORN with just a couple of provocateurs.

Ironbite 2.0, you should probably work on your reading comprehension, that is nothing like what Rageaholic was saying. Rage is saying that MADD is a prohibition group that uses emotional arguments like "her kid died" to raise money and do things like this.
