Its NOT the DREAM act by a mile, but its a start. Basically if these people were brought over when they were children, managed to make something out of their lives and stay out of jail, they'll get work permits. Its not citizenship but it gives them some footing.
Quote
The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.
Quote
Under the administration plan, illegal immigrants will be immune from deportation if they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed.
The policy will not lead toward citizenship but will remove the threat of deportation and grant the ability to work legally, leaving eligible immigrants able to remain in the United States for extended periods. It tracks closely to a proposal offered by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida as an alternative to the DREAM Act.

It should be noted the move does not require congressional approval, where the complete DREAM act failed. The White House did this unilaterally.

And the icing on the cake?

And I saw that Faux News said this morning that this would grant full citizenship to illegals.

Let's see how long it takes Marco Rubio to act like he never did such a thing.

In a statement, Rubio straddled praise and criticism for the move.

"Today’s announcement will be welcome news for many of these kids desperate for an answer, but it is a short term answer to a long term problem," he said. "And by once again ignoring the Constitution and going around Congress, this short term policy will make it harder to find a balanced and responsible long term one."

Well, maybe if the Republicans didn't refuse to work with the administration on every single agenda item, the administration wouldn't have to use tactics like this.  Also, fuck you.

You do what you must to get things done, and having the other party oppose you on every single issue just means you have to go heavy-handed. Just glad to see that something was done for a change, and something that needed doing besides.

"Nope, the left hasn't done anything worthwhile, Obama's been a complete lame-ass who doesn't dare rise up against the Republican party"

This is both good and bad.  Those who were brought here as children don't really deserve to be punished for what their parents did.

On the other hand, unless these same people are given some sort of path to citizenship, it will be little more than an empty gesture.
