Skeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!~

That being said, I'm betting the cat probably doesn't really comprehend what it's doing.  All it probably knows is "I tap my mouth, human gives me food :D"

So what? My cat's been using language to express his culinary wants for years.

For example, he tells us we bought the wrong kind of Fancy Feast by taking a shit on the carpet.

My aunt's cat shakes his back leg like a dog to say he likes being scratched just below the chin.

My cat tries to open doors. And writes sonnets.

My cat prefers the direct approach.  When he wants to be petted, he grabs your hand.  When he wants the food you're holding, he either grabs the food, or else tries to pull your hand closer in to proper yoinking distance.

The elder of my cats will poke you with his paw if he wants you to pet him, or jump on you. It's adorable, but gets rather annoying when you're trying to sleep.

That's nothing. I'll be impressed when the human learns cat-language.

My kitty can bark like a dog.  Eat it!

*flicks tail in annoyance*

I think that humans actually can understand cat language (comprehend it, however, is a different story), it's just that we can't really communicate to them in it.

For instance, I know how to recognize certain meows that my cat makes (He makes one sound for lonely, one sound for when he's about to barf, one sound as a greeting, one sound to mean he wants to be fed, and one sound when he wants to be petted - unfortunately, the last one is nearly identical to the "wants to be fed" one) but sometimes it's like he's trying to converse with me and I have no idea what he's trying to communicate.

My cat responds vocally when spoken to, but it all sounds the same to me. It's actually rather curious because even though he's 16 pounds of lean muscle, he still has a high-pitched whiny meow that makes everyone LOL.

One of my cats, who's lived with us for a year, has a really wide vocal range and I have no clue what any of it means. The other one, who's lived with me for three years, has exactly one sound- a very meek, high-pitched meow that covers everything, but I can usually tell what he wants. (I think it's because I've had him since nine weeks, but she was already around two or three when we adopted her.) I was joking because humans are usually good at expecting everyone else to learn how to communicate with us, without bothering to learn how to communicate back, i.e. "Why don't they just learn English!" crap.

How strange...

I have a similar situation. My two cats are only some 9 months apart in age. The elder just makes the one sound - we call it his 'word', which is 'maow', and he uses it in all situations. The younger cat makes the strangest collection of chirps, cheeps and squeaks - more like a bird than a feline. They came to us on the same day and so there has been no difference in their upbringing.

When my cat wants her water changed, we'll find her drinking out of the toilet... >.<
If she wants to be petted, she'll dig her claws into your leg to get your attention.
If she wants food, she'll just come out of hiding and sit beside you and stare at you until you get up. If you don't pay any attention to her, she'll give you one of her quiet, little meows.
It's so cute when she's happy though... she's half manx, and so she has an inch long stump for a tail, and when she's happy you'll just see the little stump go back and forth.

BTW... my kitty's turning 22 yrs old this year.
