Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 years in prison
« on: August 21, 2013, 05:02:15 pm »
35 years, and he could be paroled as early as 2021

Certainly a step up from the 60 years the prosecution was pushing for.  I'd be interested in knowing what happened to those people in the "Collateral Murder" video.

I'm glad he didn't get 60 years.

Heard about this on the radio this morning. 35 years is better than 60, but it's still bullshit!

The helicopter pilots have not been prosecuted. Not sure about the victims.

Lets be honest here, it might not be 60 years, but it is still enough of a beat down to successfully enforce the American anti-wistleblower policy that is emerging. That is 35 years after the past 5 years he has already spent in prison, and completely ignoring the 1 year he spent being tortured in solitary confinement.

Lets face it, he deserves to be free, but the American government is using him as a symbol of what will happen to anyone who dares go against the establishment and who dares report on the evils of the American government.

I agree with Sylvana. Here's hoping that future whistleblowers aren't discouraged.

You mean Chelsea Manning.

Yeah, how many people saw THIS coming?

Now to wait for the fundies to start going on about how they knew he was a fag because only fags would betray their country like he did...

(Yes, I used the male pronoun deliberately.)

Huh. I wonder if that's one of the reasons she was in touch with Zinnia Jones.

Title change
Didn't see it coming but I'm not surprised
She probably had to wait because this would be evidence against her
also the 35 years could be 8 hope it will be

Wait, how would gender identity be evidence against her? She didn't exactly release classified documents to pay for a mysterious medical treatment.

....okay, but that's not evidence. It can barely even be proven to be against her.

It's not really surprising if you've been following the case. I've seen articles that mentioned that one of the sources of Manning's depression was body dysphoria.

Actually, it was brought up at trial. http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2013/08/22/bradley-chelsea-manning-wikileaks.html

Quote
Manning's struggle with gender identity disorder — the sense of being a woman trapped in a man's body — played an important part at his court-martial.

...

Retired Sgt. 1st Class Paul Adkins testified as a defence witness, saying in April 2010, just a month before Manning was arrested, the soldier emailed him a picture of himself in a blonde wig and lipstick with a letter titled, "My problem."

"I don't know what to do anymore, and the only `help' that seems to be available is severe punishment and/or getting rid of me," the email said. "All I do know, is that fear of getting caught has caused me to go to great lengths to consciously hide the problem."

Manning's attorney said the email was evidence the military knew of Manning's struggles, yet allowed him to stay in Iraq as an intelligence analyst and keep his security clearance.
