The retailer said it would give workers a holiday meal, extra pay and 25% off of an entire purchase in order to combat the backlash that retailers were ruining Thanksgiving for their employees.

Because nothing says "we care about our employees" like an extra dollar an hour for one day, a mediocre dinner and an easier way to give their money back to the company in exchange for making them lose the chance to spend time with their families and deal with customers who should ALSO be spending time with their families.

They don't need a Thanksgiving bonus, they flat-out need a raise.

Like, say, paying everyone the living wage at minimum.

And the people in the comments are simply the most darling fountains of wisdom.

For all these morons screech about "you're paid what you're worth!", they would be in a nasty shock if all these "worthless cogs" were to suddenly disappear.  Also, they seem to have absolutely no grasp on how job-searching in a shitty economy works.

I also hate how US history has apparently warped the image of slavery as being nonexistent as long as workers aren't physically held against their will and whipped in fields.  It's hilarious how fucked up this country is when it comes to work.  You're a worthless freeloader if you're not working.  What?  You are working?  Well, you're worthless for not working a better job.  Also, you may need to get a second job and work twice as much into an early grave so you can merely survive instead of actually live.  Hard, honest work is great and noble, until workers feel they should be compensated more.  Because we live in a false meritocracy where everything is earned in perfect proportion and is not subject to reality!

But remember, income + no whips = not slavery!  (I guess it's only slavery if China does it.  Because communism.)

I can try to say it better: "Work will set you free," -Motto of Auschwitz concentration camp.

Our corporations are becoming damned parasites, sucking the livelihoods of millions dry.

Haven't seen any of these bins at my store, but management tries its damnedest to push the corporate narrative that we are paid enough for our work.

I made the mistake of reading the comments on that article. Those people are just disgusting. Do you think I enjoy breaking my back for 8 hours a day only to scrape by until next payday and only managing that because I still live at home? Do you think I enjoy going home every night wanting to kill myself because I'm stuck in a dead end, miserable shit pile of a job and can't see any other way out because there's not a decent fucking job within a hundred miles? I've found promising job openings and get passed over immediately because we're a college town and there as so many unemployed, overqualified college grads also in the market. Studied my ass off and got an associate's degree that's worth absolutely fucking nothing.

To all the people in the comments justifying wal-mart's bullshit: Fuck you, fuck your condescension, and when you show up on black friday and tell us how horrible it is we have to work on thanksgiving, you take your faux sympathy and you stick it right up your goddamned ass.

This is sick. I knew that Wal-Mart sucks in 50 different ways but since this means they are practically admitting that people can't live with the income they get from working for them (and that is clearly the implication behind this), why won't they just raise the pay a bit?

No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!

This isn't a corporate thing guys.  Just something one store is doing for their employees.

It is possible for both conservatives and liberals to be right. Walmart is an extractive organisation that pays exactly what you're worth: nothing. You simply have no rights. You deserve no remuneration for merely obeying the legitimate instructions of your betters, such as work until you die.
