Yes, Ted Cruz is still a Canadian citizen even though he said he'd renounce his citizenship by the end of 2013. Now it seems he's trying to make it seem as if the process is really complicated...

That's confounding Canadian immigration lawyers. Renouncing Canadian citizenship, they say, is a simple, quick and straightforward process — there's even an online, four-page PDF form on the Government of Canada website to get the ball rolling without the help of lawyers.

It's not necessarily a bad idea to retain a lawyer to make sure you get everything right, but it really does seem as if he's trying to make this more complicated than it is.

Meanwhile, Conrad Black is saying things with which I agree:

Sadly, I suspect that if Cruz is disqualified from running for president since he's from Canada, he will throw a fit about how the system is biased against conservatives because it allowed Obama to run despite being born in Kenya. Which he wasn't, but Cruz and his followers would naturally refuse to believe that.

Hah, if anyone should know that this is a terrible idea, it's Conrad Black.

Not the least bit surprising that this is drawing parallels to the Black case, though. Either Cruz is dumb enough to sit around waiting for the right moment for a highly public show of renouncing his citizenship, ala Black, or he's just smart enough to realize that retaining it by bullshitting about red tape (and really, how many American conservatives are going to double check his claim?) might come in handy in the future if he gets himself into trouble.

I'm kind of hoping that it's the former. The schadenfreude from Conrad Black was just too sweet to be a one-time thing. It's probably the latter, though.
