Susan G. Komen caves anti-choicers
« on: February 01, 2012, 02:50:52 pm »
They have withdrawn their support of Planned Parenthood, which provides important health screening and treatment, in order to show they are "pro-life": http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/31/komen-for-the-cure-halts-_n_1245320.html

Quote
NEW YORK — The nation's leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates – creating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.

The change will mean a cutoff of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, mainly for breast exams.

Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress – a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups.

Do conservitards really have a hard-up on abortion they forget that Planned Parenthood...PLANS PARENTHOOD!?  They do more to help couples get ready for a kid then they do abortions.  It's just...amazing how much these morons focus on that little sliver of the pie up there without seeing the big picture.

Ironbite-they're already feeling backlash on this btw.

Actually, most conservitards don't see it as "Parents are planning a family with the aid of PP," they see it as "Margaret Sanger created PP so that she and her army of abortion ghouls could PLAN YOUR FAMILY FOR YOU!!!"

The slate nails the situation:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2012/01/31/susan_b_komen_charity_throws_planned_parenthood_under_the_bus_.html

Quote
"The existence of breast-cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood has always been a thorn in the anti-choice side. Most of Planned Parenthood’s services are related to the choice to be sexually active—contraception, STD screening and treatment, cervical cancer screening—making it easy to write off those services as unnecessary if you follow the strict abstinence-only prescription the Christian right has for women. Breast cancer, however, can strike the lifelong virgin, the married woman who only has sex for procreation, and the dirty fornicator (i.e. the vast majority of American women) alike. Because of this, anti-choicers have tried to create a rift between women’s health advocates who focus on breast cancer and those who focus on reproductive health concerns below the waist. Today, they had a victory with Komen’s act of cowardice."

More people were going to die of breast cancer regardless.

And how do you figure pro-life people don't care about breast cancer? They're two entirely different subjects. Do you only care about one single issue? What makes you think pro-life supporters are only interested in abortion?

What? What?! WHAT?!

WHAT THE ACTUAL GODDAMN FUCKING FUCK ARE YOU ON THAT THIS MAKES ANY SENSE TO YOU!?

The Susan G. Komen Foundation has been a despicable organization for years now. Digging into their organization you find that all they really fund is "awareness". And by "awareness" they mean running marathons, forming corporate partnerships to put pink ribbons on cereal boxes, and taking in massive donations to pay for their executives massive salaries. They donate very little to actual research.

Not to mention how they sued multiple other charities for using the phrase "for the cure." While using donation money to contribute to the legal fees.

Well, you know how it is. Cancer just won’t listen unless you have a well established and defended brand identity.

Many NGOs or other charity organisations are like this.

Also, fuck you Komen, I hope you get breat cancer and then can't pay for treatment because there is no PP and you can't afford private health cover.

It seems David Vitter (R-LA) is partly responsible for this. Not like it matters, because this may hurt Komen way more than it hurts Planned Parenthood.

Why don't these idiots understand that the majority of things that Planned Parenthood does don't relate to abortion?  While I'm sure most pro-lifers also don't support this move, those that do are just backing up the stereotype that pro-lifers really don't care about the health of women.  Cancer screening is very important, and to see people who claim to be pro-life be against something as necessary as this is really disappointing.

In case you want to know, I'm pro-choice who chooses to be generally pro-life.  As in, I'm against abortion, but I recognize that it is sometimes necessary.

They should be able to fund all that stuff without abortion money! /fundie

I'm very mad about this because I personally believe that organizations like Planned Parenthood should depend on private support so that it can be weaned off of public taxes.

Eh, I like government-supported things. Not everything can be paid for by donations because donations vary based on economy and public opinion, as this story illustrates.

"Courageous decision" my left nut. What is there to be afraid of? A pro-abortion bombing?
