Canada's warrantless surveillance bill is back and worse
« on: June 09, 2012, 11:08:06 am »
Bill C30, the sweeping Canadian warrantless Internet surveillance bill, is back from the dead.

Vic Toews, far from backing down, is pushing for a renewed multi-faceted scheme to erode Canadians’ online privacy rights: Toews has been working on a deal with the U.S. known as “Perimeter Security”, which could lead to the U.S. government having access to your private data.2 Additionally, the Federal Budget for this year includes a plan to cut funding to the watchdog responsible for overseeing Canada's spy agency, CSIS.3

All in all, Toews’ actions could lead Canada to become a large, recklessly-governed surveillance society.

Poor Canada.  Hopefully you guys have enough sane people in your government that will smack this down.  I couldn't imagine Canada willing to give in to this bill and basically let America spy through the backdoor legally.

From last time this bill came up, still relevant.

edit: eerily enough, just when I was looking for that video, my internet went out for several minutes. A coincidence, I'm sure, but still...

I don't know much about Canadian politics, but it seems to me that Harper and his cabinet are trying their damnedest to turn Canada into the USA.  Why, I'm not really sure.

You got to love clueless politicians, if the original bill didn't survive because it was too invasive, the last thing we need is a bill that's even MORE invasive.

BTW, I had no idea that the original internet spying bill failed to pass, all this time I thought it had.
