FQA's Recommended Music
« on: November 03, 2013, 01:22:03 am »
I made a thing in #fqa, but it didn't get much attention.  let's put it here to get some traction.

the rules are: you can give us up to five albums or five songs or a combination of both (hopefully we see more albums than songs).  i'll edit this master post.  choose carefully, because i'm liable to miss edits done by people, and my forum use is somewhat sparse.

let's do this!

MUSIC RECOMMENDATIONS OF USERS OF FQA

otend

Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid
An incredibly ambitious, sprawling album that manages to match the ambition with the quality of execution necessary to pull it off.  Highly varied in style, as well.

Venetian Snares - Rossz csillag alatt született
Orchestral breakcore that is both unique in its style and remarkable in its quality.  Odds are, you've never heard an album quite like this, and aside from My Downfall, we probably won't hear much like it again.

The Delgados - Hate
Chamber pop crossed with indie rock best summed up as, in the words of Godspeed, "bleak, uncertain, beautiful."  Emphasis on bleak, with topics ranging from recurring depression to the death of innocence.

Devin Townsend Project - Addicted!
Pop metal in the best possible sense, in that it combines the heaviness of alt-metal with pop sensibilities, and does an excellent job at using the best of both worlds.

Opeth - Blackwater Park
This is pretty much the defining entry in the genre of progressive death metal, often leaning closer to progressive rock than their peers.

Ulcerate - Everything is Fire
A very dense death metal album. The highlight of the entire album is Saint Merat's drumming abilities

Pensees Noctures - Nom D'une Pipe
The third effort from this french one man band. Combines black metal, blues, baroque and classical

Peste Noire - Self Titled
Plain old french black metal with a medieval twist

Made Out Of Babies - The Ruiner
Noise metal with Julie christmas.

Mans Gin - Smiling Dogs
Country, blues, americana. Whatever.

|Band| - |Album Name|

The Moody Blues - To Our Children's Children's Children

Yes - 90125

Kansas - Point of Know Return

ELO - Out Of The Blue

Rush - 2112

That was a hard thing to do, to narrow it down to 5 albums.  Still, it gives a good idea of my liking for classic Prog.

Arguably, Eminem's really cleaned up well.  Dude's got my respect back.

Yeah, I like most of Stormwarden's stuff too... and yours, Cerim.  Though it doesn't really show in my picks, hehe.  My first love shall probably always be Classic Prog.

Pendulum - Hold Your Colour   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mWLig0s_9k

Within Temptation -  Iron   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO1CCLkI6wE

Erik Ekholm - Dark Energy   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR-0669Q7cY

Nightwish - Over the Hills and Far Away   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZukuU9uohA

Mumford and Sons - Broken Crown   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXzDu071RdQ

I also second Cerim's recommendation of TSFH. Their stuff is incredibly beautiful and truly blood-pumping stuff when played over speakers. There's a reason why such a huge number of trailer utilise their music.
I once had a nightmare about chickens pecking me to death on my driveway. I told my sister to save herself.

This is the #1 nightmare.

Seconding your suggestion of Within Temptation, Indikins.  I do so enjoy 'The Howling'.

Much as I like Nightwish, if you're going to nominate Over the Hills and Far Away, make it Gary Moore's original!

Here's my favourites of the moment:

Wishbone Ash - Argus
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
Nightwish - Imaginaerum
Transatlantic - The Whirlwind

As someone who likes Nightwish, why are they the one power metal band that everyone points to? They're decent, but there are so many better bands out there. Also, I'm almost disappointed that someone already recommended Kamelot. Oh well, that means one more band that I can fit in here.

Anyway, format is "artist - album":

Machinae Supremacy - A View From the End of the World
Avantasia - The Scarecrow
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
The Sword - Gods of the Earth
Archive - Controlling Crowds
