Honestly, it doesn't even say specifically whether it was religiously motivated or not, but I'm betting dollars to donuts that it was. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Sikh religion from India?

Sadly, I've made that mistake before. When I was taking my course, one of the boys there told me he was Sikh. I blinked and asked him "Is that with the Shiite or the Sunni?"

He face palmed... and then so did I when he explained it to me. Sorry Amandeep.... >.>

Odd thing is Sikh's have very little motivation to be violent as their text is more about protection then anything else.   Moral of the story stop assuming things

Actually, Sikh extremist groups were very active in the 1980s.  In fact, up until Sep. 11, either the deadliest or second deadliest terrorist attack was conducted by some Sikh group out of Canada.  The attacks were in response to a raid by the Indian army on a Sikh holy site.

So, yeah, I second Smurfette Principle's statement.  Reports from survivors say the perpetrator was a big bald white guy, and given how Sikhs have been attacked before for being Muslim, it wouldn't surprise me if the gunman thought he was attacking a mosque(assuming this wasn't just a random target).

Also, if this was a right wing terrorist attack, cue the "it wasn't terrorism excuse" from Republicans and right wing media outlets.
